Thanked: 1160Approx twice a week, sometimes try to sneak an extra session in for pampering sake.
Two passes 1WTG 1ATG And scything on the neck .Anymore than two passes starts to get a little burny not counting touch up.
I also just recently incorporated pre-shave oil into my prep also and it's helped A lot with keeping the shave smooth.Last edited by Nightblade; 09-03-2015 at 11:39 AM.

I used to shave daily and did 2.5 passes, I recently started missing a day here and there and did exactly the same.
Tonight I did a single pass which will get me through until tomorrow but it won't be as smooth.
I think that as has already been stated, you will just have to try it and see.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

3 pass shave every night except Friday night to give my face a rest.
Although, sometimes that means I do one pass on Saturday morning because I'm addicted to a smooth face. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Sounds like there are none that do a single pass ATG. Probably would be too irritating to the skin. I have decided to shave every other day and try for no less than 2 passes, depending on the closeness achieved and required. Thanks for all the responses!

I read an article written in the 70's if I recall correctly written by a feller who had taught himself to use a straight razor. He reckoned that the ATG pass was the way to go but I would say he is in the minority.
Before you commit to any routine, why not experiment a bit and see what works for you.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Thanked: 96I used to do a 3 pass every day then I was watching one of Lynn's beginning shave video's and he spoke about one pass with the grain and a diagonal second pass. I tried it and got a very close shave. Could I get better with 3 passes, probably, but the 2 passes gives me a very close shave. It's quicker with less irritation. Worth the try. You need to take your hand a determine what is actually diagonal for you.

Thanked: 56I'd think one pass ATG would work fine for someone with a relatively soft and sparse beard. If you have a heavy and/or coarse beard, you're setting yourself up for an uncomfortable shave. Perhaps if you shaved 3x a day and kept the hairs knocked down before they had much of a chance to grow, but that could introduce a whole different kind of discomfort, not to mention the time needed to do so.

I do the triple pass, most relaxing state of mind for me, then finish off sometimes (maybe every third day) with a ever so fine edging around my moustache with a DE, works for me.
