Default Did any of you take up Straight Razor Shaving to be....

Good to the environment? I became so disgusted at throwing away disposable razors knowing they would be there in the landfill for hundreds of years.

Now, I am trying to ensure the creams and soaps that I use are:

    (1) Organic

    (2) Packaged in containers made from materials that can be recycled.

    Anybody else?

I didn't, but it is an added benefit.

First attempt was because I was bored and had recently found out that I had a shavette. Gave it a shot, got the best shave ever up to that point in my life, and fell in love. Switching to the straight was even better.

And then this website just dragged me down the rabbit hole...

It certainley factored into the decision to switch, it did seem wasteful to just chuck a cartridge every couple of weeks. That and the razor burn.

The waste of disposables was a factor for me.

I came to straights from an enjoyment of knife honing and the principle of sharpening tools instead of buying new. I re sharpen all of my other cutting tools including drill bits, I have even sharpened a tap or two, so why should I be throwing away razors instead of sharpening them.

I shaved with a straight since I was pubed. Back then I don't think they had disposables.

I like the nostalgia associated with straight razor shaving.
I suppose that is why I favor the older razors rather than new ones.

Nope, never crossed my mind ! The only environmental issues I care about are global warming,it's below zero with the wind howling most of the time were I am so I'm really rooting for this global warming thing,in fact I just discharged a 12 pack of aerosol paint cans to speed things up ! Just doing my part.
In all seriousness I started out of nostalgia. That's how Grampa did it,I'm also a sucker for old and cool ! Old School ! The fact that I'm not paying for razors that some add says I've got to have and then throw away and get some more is a bonus.Plus the whole dump landfill thing.I'm banned from the dump anyway cause I come out with more then I take in.As far as kind to animals and the whole we don't use any animal products in our ingredients pass the Bacon !

I didn't think about environment issue when I started, but definitely it was one of the argument when I tried to explain to my wife why I need all this stuff (soaps, brush etc)

I never took it up with that in mind, but I honestly think its contributed to me becoming more environmentally conscious.

No, just took it into my head I wanted to try it in my old age. I like George Carlin's take on saving the planet. Don't worry it will be here loooong after we are gone.
