I know how you feel. A play partner once splashed rubbing alcohol on my girly bits... I very nearly ripped his head off.

Also, welcome, olivia! I wish I could give you some pointers, but I haven't attempted a PCR shave with a straight or DE yet.

Hey Olivia, welcome. The coochie shave has now become a routine between my GF and I, so maybe I can offer something useful. Here are a few of the causes of irritation I can think of:

-- Inadequate prep. To prepare properly, you should:
    - Wash the hair with soap to degrease it of waterproof skin oils, followed by:
    - Hot shower or hot towel
    - Apply shave oil
    - Apply shaving soap & let it soak in for a minute while stropping or whatever

    -- Inadequate lubrication.
    - Use a shave oil (for coochie shaving, use a sex lube like System Jo)
    - Don't let the lather get dry. Keep it wet.

-- Bearing down too hard on the blade.
This is easy to do, even if you don't think you're doing it. Shaving requires a VERY light touch. You want to get hair only. If you see dead skin accumulating on the cutting edge, you're pressing too hard.

I have yet to get my GF BBS because I've been concentrating more on safety, not so much on closeness. But she says that my barbering is the only irritation-free shave she's ever had.

Oh, btw, keep the soap (and, as you discovered, the alum) out of the opening. I also recommend using fragrance- and color-free soap. (Actually it was one of the ladies who first recommended that, I can't remember who). The classicshaving.com house brand has one. (The soap, not the lady).

    Hope this helps,
    -Johnny

    PS: The kitty is funny

I might be able to give a few small pointers as to the nature of the razor you are using. A DE is an exceptionally sharp exposed blade, instead of dragging it by the handle like you might do with a modern disposable razor, you keep it upright, and use the rounded top part as a glider almost. think of it as the old fashioned swivel part of a mach 3

Where with a straight we advise you to hold an angle off the skin, you can use the upright handle in a similar manner to judge your angle with a DE.

I've had good results with a DE I think because I know how to feel the angle, and I don't apply pressure. I can get nearly as close with a DE as I can with a straight, but it isn't as comfortable.
Try starting with the handle at a 90 degree angle from your skin, and tilt it just enough that it shave, rather than expecting to drag it by the handle...

Otherwise the concepts are all the same, use good soaps/lather, moisturize and do a good prep, start slow and build confidence as your skill grows...
and get a straight, they really are more comfortable.

Hi Olivia! Welcome to SRP and PCR!

I'm glad Viola tempted you to join. I had 3 coochie shaves with a straight, I get irritated by Spike's Juniper shave soap so I'm so pleased we've just ordered a natural plain one from Mama Bear as I think this is going to be better than a scented one.

Last night it also felt like Spikes blade was dragging after about 5 minutes, so extra stropping may need to be added into the process too. Being nicked hasn't put me off, but it has highlighted the need for extra care and a shorter blade.

Johnny J, thank you kindly. I thought it was both funny and made the point clear.

Default Update: thanks for the kind words and ideas

Thank you so much for the welcome All,

My shave was with a beautiful Mekur (Viola has wonderful taste) and come this morning the irritation is all gone. It is not the closest shave ever, but it is also not nearly as "ouchie" as I thought it would be. I welcome the suggestion of a shave soap that is au natural. Mike and Johnny your detailed advice is much valued.

As for the Straight Edge, I will leave that to Viola....plus it is really nice to have someone shave me! If I can get over my heart pounding out of my chest, talk about trust.

    Thank you all!

Do yourself a BIG favour and visit Colleen. She is member churley. Sending her a PM is probably her most comfortable way of interacting, but you can visit her website The Gentlemen's Quarter to have a look at her stuff. Her soaps are great, but her creams are unbelievably moisturizing.

    Welcome to the club.

Welcome to the Forum & the thread, Olivia!!! I like how you described your shaving ritual. We all do it, to some extent, I suppose.

I can only agree with what has been said about preparation. You've definitely got the right idea by soaking in the tub first. Silver & I both do so before a shave now. The results are much better. At least you can soak easily, without having to lie submerged from nose down....

I cannot help you with the DE. Never used one. Get a straight as soon as you can. Not that I'm biased.

Have fun & learn much here. It's a great place to come & Laugh yourself silly.

    Spike
