Thanked: 52I learned to shave on a DE in the 60's and then went down the commercial new improved multiblade gizmo path till I discovered straights last November at the age of 59. I also since have gotten a couple of old Gillette DE's (like I started with) that I use when time is tight, but I'd wanted to try straight razor shaving for years.

Thanked: 170Age 73. Started about 6 weeks ago. Used a DE for a couple of years before that. The straight is going well, I'm having the usual beginner issues with my adam's apple area, but it gets better every shave. Thanks to SRP for all the great information!

A question to those who started later in life, What did you use before? I am puzzled by the guys who just started with DEs, and then went to straights, especally those over 40,What did you start shaving with?

Thanked: 983Well, for one, I started with a single edge plastic disposable, then moved to a progression of cartridges, tried an electric, then back to carts again, and now here I am. Possibly the over 50's group might have started with DE's...

Thanked: 46I started with a straight (cut throat) at 40. The first razor to touch my face was my grandfather's DE ... or the blade thereof ... just under the nose ... won't be doing THAT again! Anyway, I spent most of my shaving "career" using cartridges and electrics getting gradually less and less comfortable with both as I've gotten older and my facial hair has turned more into facial steel wire.

I started with my dads DE when I was a kid, then I just got lazy and did the cart thing for about 30 years. The wife would get me progressively more blades on each cartridge, until I was shaving with some 5 blade pos that burned me up every time.
I kind of stopped shaving daily, and went to a once a week look for a few years, always kind of bushy, just basically looking like a bum every day except the weekends, then I'd start over again.
Now that some of the joy of shaving has been restored by the str8's, I'm a once a day guy again.
It sure didn't break my heart to get away from the cartridges. :P
Happy shaving!!
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --
