Almost 3x your age. I tried a straight about 30 years ago and succeeded in irritating and cutting my face while removing few whiskers. There was no internet or even personal computers. I got a strop and tried to sharpen the flea market vintage straight with little success. Most people shaved with a DE razor. No one used a straight at that time, except barbers. Barbers all used real straights, HIV fear was in the future.
I like edged tools and knives and came back to straight razors through this site. I try to work with a shave ready straight each day but still need to clean up using a DE. I already had water stones, paddle strops, and compounds for my knives, but acquired a Miller latigo hanging strop for my straights. So far, stropping and compounds have been all that I need to keep my 3 shave ready straights sharp.Last edited by sheajohnw; 11-16-2011 at 03:18 AM.

Thanked: 27056. I wish I had started much younger than 54 but you can't cry over spilled milk.
Some people who haven't used anything but cartridges, disposables, and electric razors are afraid of even SE and DE razors because they think it is dangerous to handle a blade.
What I enjoy about it is that (1) I had to learn how to do this, and (2) I'm getting the best shaves of my life with this.
I hated shaving for 40 years because my face always felt chapped. I wouldn't shave on the weekends and any other time I could avoid it. Now my face feels good.
I'm always glad to read about people who discover retro shaving at an earlier age than I did.
Straight razor shaver and loving it!40-year survivor of electric and multiblade razors
