Looks like the spike got me, but no. I was really looking forward to a nice relaxing Saturday morning shave, (wouldn't have been saying that two years ago),we had taken a late delivery of materials on site and pressed for time. I was de-nailing a piece of timber, ironically to prevent an injury, it slipped in my hands and gave me a nice smile on my cheek. I nailed myself. The wife had a chuckle. She could see how annoyed I was, not because of the cut, but because I won't be able to shave for a few days.

Here is mine today, my new razor and I are still getting to know each other. Lol the razor burn was already there from having to use a cartridge for a couple weeks. Ugh. Name: IMG_20140303_175720_889.jpg

This was an old post. How's progress?

I had almost the exact same experience back in '78 (not with a razor - the top of an old fiberboard qt. oil can with metal lids). Somehow got the middle section of left index finger in the opening (where you shove the spout in, for those old enough to remember). Also relative rotational motion of can and finger. Cut to the bone about 50 deg. around the finger - it did stop the cutting - and 9 stitches as I recall. Same thing - young intern. Told him "My finger is numb from cut to tip. Do I need a neurosurgeon?" "Oh no, it is just traumatic numbness, the feeling will come back in a few days." Fast forward to Mar 2014 - midline to upper left of that finger is still 75% numb, and if I bang that area in just the right way...let's just say cracking your elbow funny bone is not even close. Sorry to give you disheartening words if you still have numbness, but that was my experience. Hope yours has fully recovered.

OH, by the way, keep the slashing up going, didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade. I guess on gun web sites they have an 'unauthorised discharge of the day' thread, or a 'Oh, I just shot my foot off' thread... :-)

    JOKES people, JOKES!
That would be "negligent discharge" or ND. Never seen such a thread (maybe not looking), but it will earn you a DQ from IPSC/USPSA/IDPA pistol matches.

Yep. They're called SawStop saws. The blade is stopped by a big cartridge with two big "Brake pads" under a LOT of spring tension. When the sensor fires it, those puppies slame shut on either side of the blade. We have one in the carpenter's shop where I work.

I've seen the hot dog demo, but someone would have to be an IDIOT in my book to intentionally put their hand/fingers into a running table saw blade. Technology/mechanical/electrical things can, and do, fail.

    They are good insurance, but:

    (1) the replacement cartridge - good for one firing - is about $100 (or was a couple years ago).
    (2) it usually destroys the blade (blade inertia + extreme deceleration = warped blade)
    (3) the saws cost about 2 -3x more than an regular commercial table saw to begin with.

Better to spend $3k-$4k and a saw in daily use, and $150-$250 on parts than many $tens of thousands on reattachment OR amputation surgery. I only have a Delta table saw in my home shop - and have been using table saws for about 35 yrs, and also the dastardly Radial Arm Saw (an early 60's Craftsman 12" - was my dad's) for longer than that. Never close to a blade cut (knock on wood). I did get a tiny nick (not even a bandaid) with a handheld circular saw last year though, and that was a first. Fortunate it was real cold and I was wearing insulated leather gloves. Cut a nice slash in the outer layer of leather. I felt the zing and yanked my hand out to the side away from the blade before it hit skin. fortunately is was just a grazing cut at the fingertip of the glove. It would have taken a couple finger tips at minimum if my fingers were wrapped further under the sheet I was cutting.

Same as with shaving, in a hurry and not paying enough attention. Fortunately an intense reminder without serious injury.
