Allow me to assess the Skyfall movie. I have all of the Bond movies and this is my first one in BluRay. This is an impressive movie worthy of my collection; however, it does not rank among the very best of the franchise. The special effects and of course the use of the straight give it major cool, and what I really appreciate is that it is in so many ways a return to "old school" bond. This would seem to be the theme of the movie. The old ways have merit and should not be so quickly, if ever, discarded in favor of technology, processes, or systems. This should resonate with those of us who appreciate the nostalgia and benefits of straight razor shaving. Of course, this is just one man's opinion.

The appeal of these Bond movies to me was the fact that he was "hip," always ahead of his time, confident, no concessions to human frailities.

I thought this movie violated all of those things.
I see your point, but only after you pointed it out, but that was not my thoughts when watching the movie.
I love the bond movies, and I think this was one of the best yet. I like to think of him going "old school". As a sign of the times, many of our generation love going old school. It's part of why I love straights, mechanical watches, fountain pens, ect.

It's frankly something I did like.

I totally agree with you that the earlier movies had the effect of portraying Bond as hip, ahead of his time, et cetera. But being a member of the younger generation (born in the early 80's), the first bond movie I saw in theaters was Goldeneye. And to me, Pierce Brosnan's Bond was caddish and corny. When I would see him getting all giddy over the newest gadget, he didn't seem modern, he seemed like a middle aged dad who had discovered how to use his son's playstation. Skyfall shows a middle aged man coming to grips with being middle aged, and for men of my generation I think showing him driving a DB5 and shaving with a straight is a much cooler image than trying to be a 25 year old. I liked it!

    It did indeed.

I wouldn't want to see the franchise make a steady diet of this, but it was a fantastic character enrichment.

At one point in the movie, the woman asks him,
"What do you know about fear, Mr. Bond"?
After a brief pause, his reply:
    "...All there is".

Who's more bad-ass? Someone who knows no fear.... Or someone who's been there and back?

I know who I'd want watching my back.
