The Shapton M5 12k I have is a ceramic, which probably explains the hard/smoothness. I don't know what binder is used for the Norton, but it is likely manufactured in a significantly different way. I also suspect the M5 has a lower grit density than the Norton... it is quite slow, in my VERY limited honing experience. But that was a desired trait when I was looking for a hone to use during my self-education in the subject . Slow stones ensure that you really have to work for those major foul-ups!

The M5 12k & the HNK are similar except for size, in that the M5 is bonded to a ceramic layer so much thinner.
The 12 k is a fast stone . You sure you're honing on the right side ?

Hehehe, agreed - fast stone. I think I only did 10 laps, no pressure, and saw a significant difference over the 8k.

If your Norton 8k is gritty then I might suggest lapping it. I meant that the Shapton is grittier then the 8k. And by that I simply mean that you can feel a hint of the abrasiveness of the stone. Not quite like my coticule, but not a glassy stone either.

only had it happen once that i can recall but it was a bad one! years ago when Gold was somewhere around $330 an ounce I bought a Gold Coin, supposedly from an old shipwreck off California, the seller had many and they all sold in the $360-370 range, I won one for $354 woohoo! It went missing and I couldn't get any resolution or refund from seller or ebay, It ended up not showing up......... til over a year later! Post office claimed it fell behind a sorting machine up in Maine and was discovered when they were moving machines around! So fas forward a few more years, Gold skyrocketed and I had lost my job, was selling off all my Gold and Silver, this was one of the last pieces. I took it to a jeweler to test it and turns out its a fake! Now I keep it as a reminder to ask questions and educate myself before I buy anything on Ebay, including straight razors of course

Wow, that is a bummer. I'll keep that in mind if I ever my something on eBay that can be counterfeited. I think I'm safe with vintage razors. [emoji1]

you might think so but there are sellers who get ahold of reproduction razors that are simply Razor shaped objects, think they have a legitimate vintage razor and try selling it as such. I've caught examples here and there and if it looks like a seller is just unaware I send them a friendly message to let them know they are not selling a vintage blade, but a reproduction that won't shave.

Its even better when its out for delivery and deliverd to the wrong house on the same street and it takes them a week to puck it up and deliver it to you, but if they told me the address I could had pucked it up in under 20 minutes

2k kuromaku just arrived, this should make my transition from 1k to 5k a bit smoother. Can't wait to see.
