Yeah Shaun there's quite a pile building up here that's for sure. Good thing I get the mail and keep them in drawers. That way someone doesn't realize the amount. Not that she's not spoiled but ya know how that goes
HarryWally that is one sweet blade there congrats
I enjoy collecting, but also the ones I am not fond of will move out. Quite a few I have need to be repaired or just cleaned up. Got them at such good prices I might make a buck. But then there's ones that I just won't part with. They are just too classic. Any W&B stays, except a couple I have doubles ofLook sharp and smell nice for the ladies.~~~Benz

Thanked: 481Had a few boxes come in today, it was pretty exciting until I had a revelation. Among the boxes was my package from Japanese Natural Stones. But just a moment ago I was looking at the picture I saved of the stone I paid for, and comparing it to the one in hand. Wrong stone, possibly wrong order because I ticked teh 'with Nagura' box, but this strange yellow brick that looks nothing like what I envision when I think of Nagura came with. Contacted JNS, we'll see what (if anything) can be done about it...I'm not necessarily concerned about the Shoubudani because the one I've got may be a bit uglier, but it's still a Shoubudani. But if that yellow brick is indeed another hone type I'd feel pretty bad having someone's Koppa or whatever it is. Pretty big price gap between a nagura stone and another Jnat.
Anyway:
Shapton Kuromaku 12K, and from SRD the linen for my SRD strop, Chrome Ox, and Captain's Choice North aftershave. The description of the scent drew me in, and I had to get it. I'm not disappointed, it will make me smell like a pine forest. Kind of awesome in that lumberjack kinda way.
Edit - I don't want that to be taken as vendor bashing by the by. Mistakes happen. But if by chance whoever was supposed to get that from JNS also got mine, and is an SRP member, then maybe we could arrange to correct the issue.Last edited by Marshal; 02-25-2017 at 02:26 AM.

Thanked: 481First impression - harder than my Nortons, definitely splash & go. Feedback is a tad grainy. The Norton 8K is softer and smoother. But the Shapton is clearly finer. Weird how that works out.
It's been too long since I've used synthetics. Either that or I was just too weary to hone proper. I took my Germania Cutlery Works that was shaving immaculately (previously honed on Dragon's Tongue and a Llyn Melynllyn) and touched it up on the Norton 4/8 and Shapton 12. I was a little disappointed in the shave, not nearly as good as the razor performed before the touch up. I think in spite of my best efforts I've failed to max out the stones. Because I patently refuse to believe that even my purple slate is finer than 12K.
Well, tomorrow's another day. More testing required to come to any conclusions. But I think when I get it pinned down I'll be fairly happy with the Kuromaku 12K.

I wonder if that Shapton 12k is any relation to my M5? I only recently acquired a Norton 4k/8k... but agree with your comparison between the two. My Shapton is definitely harder, and less "gritty" during use than the Norton.
The Shapton M5 12k I have is a ceramic, which probably explains the hard/smoothness. I don't know what binder is used for the Norton, but it is likely manufactured in a significantly different way. I also suspect the M5 has a lower grit density than the Norton... it is quite slow, in my VERY limited honing experience. But that was a desired trait when I was looking for a hone to use during my self-education in the subject . Slow stones ensure that you really have to work for those major foul-ups!Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.
