If you use a GFCI plug and can fish a single wire down the wall and ground it to the old-house pipe, you will have all the protection you need.
Surprisingly, I have found old copper wire has shown to be quite enduring.
It's those renovations and 'upgrades' that seem to cause problems.
JMO
