Jonathan, it says breadknife stropping & I thought that was strange & was hoping my computer didn't over correct itself again but it didn't but yours might have.
Practicing with a butterknife is what I usually tell beginners to do because they can get the feel of it w/o cutting a nice strop & also dulling a good edge on a straight razor. It helps people to get used to the stroke & motion used & when they are comfortable with it, then they can move on to using a straight razor but hopefully w/o cutting their strop & ruining a good sharp edge. I have not done any traveling in the last few years but if I were to do so, I would either grab my DE Gillette Fatboy & use it or one of my straights with a conventional strop or a paddle strop, something that can be packed away with ease. For a hone, I would grab a Coti I have or a Swaty barber hone but a person may not really need a hone as long as the razor is shave ready before departing & the only reason I would take a hone is if I were to be gone a long time. It might not be a bad idea to have a hone in case a person accidentally cuts a strop or barely bumps the razor into something, putting a small nick in the edge. You never know, things happen when you least expect it. If taking a straight, it might not be a bad idea to take an extra if possible but you don't want to carry a lot of shaving equipment with ya either. For shaving soap, possibly a container of shaving cream or soap. For a brush, whatever he has & there are different ways to store them but one of my favorite ways if I were traveling would be to go to Home Depot or Lowes & buy a piece of PVC of the appropriate size for the brush & get a couple of end caps for it. Also drill some small holes preferably in the end caps to keep it ventilated & so it would dry out after use but before storing it in that, to make sure it is as dry as he can get it. There's no certain size holes to drill, but IMO no larger than about 1/8". Maybe wrap the PVC or container in a paper towel to absorb any moisture also. Oh & before I forget, a toothbrush traveling container works well to store a straight razor. I may have forgotten something but if so, someone else might chime in.
I'm trying to hang in there. If it isn't one thing, it's another but living from day to day. Hope you're doing okay!

Thanks engine. The toothbrush holder idea seems pretty sound. I think I'm going to actually assign certain things I have as either strictly home items, or travel items. I was pretty paranoid coming home this time. I took ultrasounds advice and packed all my most precious items in my socks and shoes. No incidents thankfully!

It's funny how attached you can become to a fairly simple tool. I might lose my mind if my thiers blade came to any harm in transit! Lol. So strange.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I have a little trick tho. If I want something nice I just get her something even nicer right before I plan on getting it! ! Works every single time! Lol.
