It's funny, you can sometimes garner one for a song.
Guys think they are honed to death.
I have at least one. Think I shall pluck it for rejuvenation soon.
Truly have never shaved with one....Last edited by sharptonn; 05-11-2018 at 01:44 AM.

Thanked: 0This thread was inspiring so I've kept an eye out. Was tempted but passed on a matched set with box because that should go to someone who values such things but this just came in the mail from France. It's from Limoges, 250km or so from Thiers and the taper is perhaps more subtle than many of these:

To give a better sense of it, I measured the spine and the distance to where it contacts the hone at a few points along the blade then ran it through a spreadsheet that purports to calculate the bevel angle (spine/span/angle mm/degrees):
5.6/15.4/21.0 heel (actually, a little in from that, where the straight line of the spine contact starts)
5.4/14.8/21.0 middle
4.8/14.2/19.5 quarter of the way in from the toe
4.2/12.2/19.8 toeLast edited by HomeAwayFromHone; 06-20-2020 at 08:12 PM.

Thanked: 0The link to the pictures doesn't work? There were a few so I didn't want to clutter up the thread (and that site is much more convenient to upload to).
Initially I was a believer in 16 degrees but then I got my Koraat and I quite enjoy the edge despite it clocking in at 20.5. I'm looking forward to this razor and was interested in tapered razors generally because I enjoy the maneuverability under my jaw that a 4/8 brings but not the light weight. Seems like this could be a good compromise for me, though not everyone's beard can accept such a blunt blade:

Thanked: 0Finally, it's here! I do enjoy the utter lack of urgency in this hobby and like that Limoges blade I posted last year, but this thread did leave me wanting to try one of the Sheffield ones you guys have. I scored a Greaves after a few months of patient eBaying but there was a long COVID delay before it made it to me.
Usually I'd be inclined to try to keep the patina intact but this one was hit pretty heavily with a wire brush at some point or the coarsest possible sandpaper. So I'm less concerned with preserving the existing situation but am afraid that if I don't go deep enough to get it all out it'll look way worse than it does now. And it'd be manual sanding as the geometry is critical here so if I wanted a regrind I'd have to spring for one of the best. Kinda torn but I'm leaning towards just getting some scales on it and keeping the battle scars.

I restored one by hand. Was a lot of work, some still left in the blade, but well worth the end results.

Very nicely done! The 'Tapered Blade Shave' is my favorite, and i choose one of my many tapered blades at least monthly as a matter of course.
