    Default Tagging a person

Just curious, is there a way that we can tag someone in a thread and they will get a notification similar to Facebook?

For instance, if I were to mention Gugi or Bruno, it would give you a notification so that you could check the thread to see why you may be tagged.

Lets say someone tagged me in a thread about a razor that I had made & didn't recall the steel or something along that line...then I would see the tag and be able to respond accordingly.

I'm sure it has a LOT to do with the base program we are working in, but wanted to ask non the less.

I think it's possible with an additional software, but I'm not sure how desirable it is, so I haven't looked into the details. I guess it's something for the staff to discuss. I'll double check on the feasibility to make sure I'm not wrong about it.

Edit, we're talking about you getting notification if somebody writes in their post @shooter74743 or similar.

Right now the @ thing is starting to make sense, someone did try to explain it to me a while back but I really didn't get it.
It would possibly be handy if you were trying to arrange something, instead of pm's and then posting a list of who had been told you could just tag them in the post and everyone else could see who had been asked.

In a Forum that is cutting edge this feels like it is moving towards more conventional social media. I guess it is inevitable and could be useful....you could also end up with a bucket full of trash talk.

We don't 'bide none of that there trash talking and blaspheming round these parts.

Seriously though I think the membership here is generally refined enough to know how to behave, and if not, one of this extended family's less kindly uncles could always give the upstart a virtual clip around the ear.

Frankly, my biggest concern is the stretches of posts like the last dozen or so in this thread. When I think of the advantages and weigh them against what I can imagine these would become I'm very... let's say 'conflicted'

I regularly look at a blog from Australia about motorcycles which is strange because I have been on one about 3 times in my life. But I do ride a bicycle. I go to the site for the aesthetics of the bikes and the comments of the regular guys who post. Occasionally they really rip into a builder for something they did on the bike and these posts and their retorts can be pretty funny. Sometimes I feel like SRP might benefit from a little more of a bare knuckle approach rather than cravats and top hats. I don't encourage meanness, but a little more constructive criticism, gently pointing out the absurdity, or just a contrary opinion and offering a way to resolve the problem. But, I guess you can't go wrong with : if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.

I agree that we should be able to point out the obvious, and it can be done - just in the right way.
If someone has put a lot of time and effort into making something for themselves, then why do I care if it is ugly as sin or weird looking. If the issue is of a practical nature or the item is going to be made for sale then that's a bit different.

I've occasionally thought how an @-mention feature would be nice. Imagine a post where I say, "I don't rinse my blade, I wipe the lather on my forearm; got the idea from @edhewitt, so I can sue him when it goes south and I slice a tendon." Ed would see a notification that I'd mentioned him in a post.

Pretty cool, though not a feature I've ever seen in a forum, as far as I can recall.
