Thanked: 13234FWIW the reputation system has always been on the forum all David did was turn it on so that all could see it...
Thanked posts have always added to ones reputation, the only real difference is that now you can directly add to another's rep or you can thank them for an informative post....
Some of the gun Chat forums that I used to visit frequently had the same systems and in general they work rather well... I am not sure if ours also looks at the threads themselves, but some of the systems would look at a thread that has huge amounts of hits and responses and would add rep to the OP's overall reputation....

Many of the more senior members of the forum posted all or the bulk of their work before "thank" became a public option for the forum. This means regardless of when reputation was being calculated, everyone's reputation was zero anyway until the thanks started flowing several months ago

Here's one thing that I am sure has occurred to others besides myself- the system is already slanted by way of moderators (as I believe Jimbo mentioned briefly). Why on earth do mods and "super"mods have 5 and even 6 stars AUTOMATICALLY? To me that takes absolutely all weight out of the system. Just because one is a mod does not mean their reputation as far as being knowledgeable about all things razors is greater than some of the afore mentioned people. A mod is chosen based on factors way outside of straight razors. I thought the original reputation/+1 discussion was asking to put a system into place where members who gave consistently accurate and valuable information would be "pointed out", not one that turns into a popularity contest (as some recent threads have done) or an "I'm privileged" showcase. I'm sorry- I know how much Wessel and others put into this site, but I think that this has started off on a bad foot.

Thanked: 39From a newbies pov I think it's great to have a something to show who is really an authority when it comes to shaving etc. and who is not. The juniormember/member/senior member thing doesn't really say much other than maybe too much free time. I mean I'm a senior member now but I'm a newb when it comes to actually shaving with a straight, but I'm still not a newbie that don't know anything. Before I even had seen a straight in real life I had spent months studying the thing theoretically (nerd factor? yes).
Anyway the reputation system would be a better marker but still it don't seem too work. I see some guys with one or two dots who are really helpful and knowledged and experienced.
Maybe we should consider another way for newbies to know who to listen more too and who to listen a little less to, because in all honesty thats how it works. If someone who is really an authority on the subject the newb will listen to that voice more than others.
Perhaps a scale of some sort where the member himself can fill in to show for example how long the he has been shaving, honing ect. and how good he is at it. This is of course then up to the honesty of the members. But I think that would be a better way of doing it. For example I saw a post by a fella some time ago who had was a junior member and had no dots, but he had been shaving with a straight for over 30(?) years and he knew what he was talking about. Still since he had no dots or anything to show for it he had to write a long biography about how experienced he in fact was.
So maybe an idea that would help the newbies?

Thanked: 335Since I'm such a fine egalitarian and fine guy in general, I've started adding reputation to everyones' posts. I'm so egalitarian that I now think that the ladies only room is a wonderful place: much and greatly needed to keep the privates private. Perhaps the mods can add to the reputation there on my behalf. I'd be ever so grateful.

If a member has more or less green thingies usually a reader can see if what he is saying is bona fide or BS. In my experience if someone is giving incorrect information on the forum another member will follow and post with the correct information. Now between the Wiki tutorials and the videos and other forum resources a new guy who does his homework will know a little bit in short order.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

None of the mods got any help in getting their rep. For example, the reason glen has 5 boxes is all the thanks and rep he got for his work in the restoration forum. I think Glen is the most thanked forum member.
OS got his rep the same way.
The only ones to get a head start were the super mods and admins. we all got a 2 or 3 block head start (I got 2 extra I think). This is not because we wanted to be king. The meter goes to 10 blocks.
The reason was that super mods and admins do a load of work behind the scenes that noone ever sees.
It was felt that admin personel should have some reputation so that they would be visible as reputable members. Especially since some of us will very rarely do something that earns them thanks, and thus would always be stuck at 1 or 2 blocks, like David.
But it is true that this was perhaps not the ideal way to start this.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
