Martin De Candre is the perfect example of how a magnificent shaving soap can be made with just simple and few ingredients. It is the proof tallow is not what makes a great shaving soap, indeed how you make it and work it.

I used to think MdC was veggie based but am not so sure now. The first ingredient listed on my jar of MdC is stearic acid which is a saturated fat and can be gotten from tallow or plants. For me, not being a chemical engineer, that creates some ambiguity on the subject. Regardless, it is an excellent performing soap.

You are absolutely right. Stearic acid can be both of animal origin and of pure vegetable origin. As the molecule is absolutely the same, producers tend not to mention the origin of the stearic acid they use for soap. There are however other producers who declare the vegetable origin of the stearic acid in labels and, of course, you have to believe in that as no one can determine its origin.
I do not know whether Martin De Candre uses a vegetable stearic acid or not, it however is an excellent performing soap, certainly among my favorites.
