Just received my HB Gunpowder spice today....yeah, wish I read this thread last week before I ordered. I like the scent , lather was alright but Im in the burning face crew with this one. I shaved a good hour ago and can still feel the tingle. Definitely a let down.
On a brighter note I did get Razorock Santa Maria del Fiore Sapone da Barba last week and love it! Im a big Krokos fan and this one reminds me of it, but with a great scent. Have only used it twice so far but for $19 I am happy. Was able to hunt down the after shave last night, liking this one!Last edited by AKmik; 09-25-2017 at 08:16 PM.

I'll add my two cents on The Holy Black:
My go to shave soap is Castle Forbes so I usually compare soaps with that in mind - good or bad it's what my brain does...
I found the scent quite pleasant - and I don't think it smells like gunpowder and I hit the range pretty frequently. Smells more like an aged Old Spice - a little less pep and a lot more earth. I found the cake a little harder than I had expected so I put a little hot water in the tin while my scuttle warmed up. Loading the brush took longer than I'm use to but the soap in my scuttle produced a nice rich lather. It was not as thick on my face right away and required a little face lathering. The lather hung right in there though once it was created on my face.
I found the glide and slip to be quite good and although I don't really know what cushion is... it seemed to provide enough cushion for zero irritation after a three pass shave with my Puma. It does not burn my face at all, I was a little surprised to read that a few of you experienced that sensation. I don't have a sensitive face.
The scent does hang around a bit - like Tabac as previously noted. I do like the scent.
I wouldn't put it in the same class as Castle Forbes only because the lather required more work on my face to setup properly. All in all, for the price, I think this is a solid shave soap.

Gentlemen,
For heavens sake, I can't even relegated the soap to the shower for fear of burning my establishment. If not passing them to friends, which I have done with scores of soaps I didn't like for a variety of reasons, I relegate them to the shower. This one is heading for the garbage. OY!Last edited by Obie; 09-26-2017 at 12:14 AM.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Perhaps if this is lathered in a bowl and enough water was added before hitting the skin, just maybe, it wouldn’t burn as much on the face. Obie, I know you face-lather and putting this on the face, while it’s highly concentrated could be causing the issue. Not an excuse by any means, just saying.... there should be instructions on the tin!
I got that from Tabac once, because I have the stick, so you know how that goes - smear it on the face, work up the lather, etc... I should add, back then, I had no idea how much water Tabac can take, so I didn’t add enough, and by a large margin! Nowdays I load the brush from the stick, whip it in a bowl, and make sure I add a ton of water. No other way for me, and no issues with the good old Tabac, none whatsoever. As the time passes, so we learn.

With my Holy Black.....I load the brush...and make lather in the scuttle...it whips up nice. I also have no trouble with a burn.

Srdjan,
I'm not sure how much watering down the lather will minimize the skin burn. It will just give us a watery lather. I am not a chemist or a dermatologist, but I think what will do it is to remove the suspect ingredient.

My Holy Black is being delivered today, so I'll see what all the fuss is about during tomorrow's shave and I'll report back.
