The Obie Memorial First Tier Soaps and Creams Thread.

Obie, while you are refreshing your monumental list, may be you'd think of reconsidering Floris placement in it: their soap is currently in the second tier. Sure the scent and the slickness are superb, but the lather just dissipates in about 30 seconds - no matter what. Of the few dozens of soaps I currently have and use, this is the only one I feel it's absolutely impossible to achieve stable lather with. I'm not sure it deserves the second (or any) tier in your list. Of course the list is yours, so feel free to disregard and to erase my comment if you disagree with it.
Also, TAoS soap is currently in both the second and the third tiers - probably an overlook from when you moved it in between.

Only if you consider a stable lather an entering requirement... I have several soaps that shave quite well, and leave my skin feeling great, but do not have stearic acids or palm oils that are necessary for a stable lather.

Not me, but to cite Obie's opening statement: "My rating of these soaps and creams is gauged by five elements: richness of lather, cushion, glide, fragrance, and aftershave feel." In Floris' soap the first two "elements" simply don't exist.

Sorry for the confusion: not Taylor's, but The Art of Shaving.

I have adjusted The Art of Shaving. What’s interesting, the old Art of Shaving was superb. If I understand, it was made by Valobra. Then the formula changed and the soap became mediocre. The Art of Shaving creams are good, though.
Floris will work if you bloom it and load your brush heavily. It’s an okay soap.

To JOB15: Thanks (great work restoring this beautiful razor BTW), I'll try to bloom it much longer then I usually do. But my point still stands: soap that consistently under-performs unless you bloom it for 35(!) minutes does not belong in the second (or any) tier.

Yes for that price also with their history and reputation it should work better..

Yes indeed, the old tallow-based formula was your regular Valobra with different scent. I still have one old sandalwood puck I really like. Their new vegetal base however - don't know who makes it for them - is mediocre at best.

A few years back, I had friends at the local The Art of Shaving Store, and I would help them out at the store on a part-time basis. It was fun. So I managed to buy several pucks of the soap before the formula was changed. I also got to know The Art of Shaving products quite well. I still like their Shave creams.

Yesterday i tried this soap and i was impressed with its slickness which is very good..I am no expert but i think bowl lathering would be the way to go with this one.
One thing that is puzzling me though. The soap smells awful . A smell which i think is some kind of Tallow/Fatty smell but i have seen a few reviews where they talk about its lovely lavender fragrance .. Do you think i got a bad batch..Maybe my puck was made from leftovers?

Anyone else tried this?

I am sure others have tried this soap so they will chime in. Being a tallow formula soap I wonder if it has gone rancid?
