Obie, Speedster, and others, thanks for your feedback on CF--just placed an order for their lavender. When all the reformulations were happening a few years ago, I largely dropped creams from my rotation because they were just too hit or miss for me.
Obie, also thanks for the tip with going with a wetter lather for straights--that's a bit counter intuitive for DE shaving, but it makes sense. It'll sort be like learning to lather all over again, but I'll definitely start making the adjustment to my routine.
I'm with you on lathering being one of most enjoyable aspects of shaving, Obie--it's what I enjoy most as well. Likewise, I'm with you on getting good products--I do the same. Once I'm more solid on my straight technique (jawline, neck, and chin are a challenge for getting good shaves, but from what I've read on SRP, those areas are tricky for many), I'll return to a few favorite soaps like MdC; likewise, I'm sure I'll be culling a few soaps from the herd as well.
Again, many thanks all for your feedback--most appreciated!

Richard, my friend, how are you?
Castle Forbes pre-shave is a water soluble cream. It does not feel oily. Actually, I have no use for oil as a pre-shave. Anyway, out of the shower, if not using a hot towel treatment, I leave my face damp, pour about a dime size amount of the pre-shave in the palm of my hand and massage my face with it. Then I apply the lather. With my ultra-sensitive skin, I feel the pre-shave helps me considerably. The Castle Forbes pre-shave helps to cushion my skin and make it slick. If using a hot towel treatment, just before lathering, I use the pre-shave. I use it only at the beginning of the shave. Good stuff.

Good to know. I dont use any creams or oils for pre-shave. Just hot shower and some massaging of my lather. Let is sit for a minute then lather again. This will be fun to try and see if it makes a difference.

The Baume.be pre-shave is a gel, that I find works best on a wet face. Consider putting it on right after a hot shower or washing your face with hot water. Let it sit while you strop and then lather right over it.
