Thanked: 70Keep at it my interesting friend. It will pay off. I agree with Steve, there is no way not having something of high interest to occupy my time with would be a sad, short life. I love cutting steel, forming, welding, painting, rebuilding engines etc. A full life needs intense interest and good friends; great food doesn't hurt either. All the best to you TC.

Here’s the way to tell plastic from glass - their plastic is good enough to fool people who haven’t had the glass jars. On the bottom of the jar, there will be some indents. If it has two small round indentions, shown on the fougere jar at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions, it’s glass. If it has a curved ramp-like indention, shown on the rose at 12 o’clock, it’s plastic.
The glass jars are considerably heavier, and they’re more rounded on the bottom corners.Last edited by Steve56; 03-29-2019 at 11:19 PM.

Here’s a clearer shot of the jar bottom profiles, you can see that the glass on the left is considerably more rounded. The reason is pretty obvious, sharper glass corners like to chip if they’re bumped. That’s also why you should round the corners of your hones. Plastic jar is on the right.
Cheers, Steve

Then mine looks like the plastic one on the right. I would have sworn in a court of law it was/is glass, though-very hard, heavy and substantial! Thanks for the pics, Steve. I love the packaging whatever it is; mine also came nestled in a very substantial and decorative cardboard box. And I can't stop sniffing the stuff-I'm maybe a day or two from trying a taste of it (kinda sorta mostly kidding!). I may need to call a sponsor for my SAD lately.
And yes-their plastic was certainly good enough to fool me. I shook it heavily out of the box for the 1st time-obviously glass. Quite an incredible material!Last edited by ScoutHikerDad; 03-30-2019 at 07:26 PM.

You’re welcome sir!
The plastic is very nice - as you will find out if you ever drop a glass MdC jar on a tile bathroom floor. It isn’t safety glass, and if you’re in bare feet your first problem will be how to get out of the bathroom. I spent an hour and a half with a magnifying glass and tweezers picking every little speck of glass off a biscuit-sized piece of MdC fougere. I got all of them too, except for one, and fortunately it did not scratch my face when it got into the lather. DO NOT handle the glass jar with wet, soapy hands, you’re almost 100% sure to drop it at least once before you use the soap up.
A Castle Forbes tub or a Maggard’s Colt PETG tub is larger in diameter and easier to lather on, especially with larger brushes. And you could probably throw the CF tub against the wall with no effect, but admittedly the tub is not as upscale as MdCs, plastic or glass.

The rumors say that the plastic tub actually costs more than the glass - and it is the best clear plastic tub that I’ve ever seen. Reportedly the glass jar manufacturer raised their minimum order so high that the sisters couldn’t justify the order cost.

This priceless moment of MDC lore will no doubt be passed on for generations among their fan-boys-just classic! As someone who let a poorly-secured gas pressure washer come through the rear sliding window of my Tacoma a few years back and still sees the occasional glint of glass winking in the carpet fibers-I feel your pain. Some lessons seem hard in the moment, no? And you better bet I strap things down now-probably way over-kill, but fool me twice, right Gomer?
Oh, and I'm kind of glad I got the plastic one after reading that story.-yikes!

I too thought mine were glass when i got them. One day i squeezed the jar by the treads and noticed it flex. Nope, plastic. But it is a damn fine looking jar.
It's just Sharpening, right?
