I've tried both, but always go back to face lathering, after all the object of the excersize is to get the lather on my face, so cut out the middleman.

Thanked: 993I used to do both, depending on my day. I.e. face lather Monday-Friday mornings, and a bowl/scuttle on Saturday and Sunday (for relaxation purposes). Now, I solely face lather. I prefer the feel of the bristles working my whiskars. I also believe that "I" get a better lather from doing it on the face as opposed to the bowl. Others may feel the opposite.
I think it really comes down to personal preference. I also have a number of different bristle styles for this very reason. I have one particular brush that has nice prickly bristles. It's perfect in the spring and fall, as it adds a bit of tingly feeling and maybe some exfoliation. Maybe it doesn't, but I sure like it during those times anyway. Then I also have super soft badgers for those mornings where you just wish you could stay in bed for 15 more minutes.

Thanks for all the advice...so far i've no problem getting good lather by lathering directly in the face. If it doesn't necessarily use more soap than using bowl..I guess i'll just keep at it then

Mug lathering and face lathering are identical. Now, bowl lathering, that's something altogether different.

Thanked: 983The difference is that a "Mug" is what you call your face in some lower socio-economic circles. Places where people with names like 'Ace' might come from...You know?! Prisons and West End London or Virginia and such...
A bowl is something placed on top of your 'Mug' to aid in getting a proper haircut in those very same circles...

I pre-warm my brush and bowl, and bowl lather to build up a stiff whip, then face lather for a minute or two with a little extra water on the brush and face to cleanse and soften the beard.
Then I take the stiff whip and brush it over top of the face lather and try to get about 1/2" cushion.
One draw back to bowl lathering is loss of fragrance, but use aftershave so not really a concern.

I began as a face latherer and it is only in the last few years that I transitioned to a bowl guy. I can make better lather for two/three passes in a bowl than face lathering. YMMV.
