Thread: I Want a Man's Soap

The title of this thread might sound a little pretentious and over the top, but I need some help here folks. I'm not into smells and would buy a soap with no smell if it was superior ----there are many smells that turn me off and few that I like ---but I do like the deep, dark, musky, masculine, I just killed a buffalo with a knife, type of smells. No lavender here, no rose petals dancing in the sunlight ---I'm talking about smells that would make Hercules proud and make Justin Timberlake run in fear. Any suggestions of soaps or creams ---- (meanwhile, I'll keep seeing a counselor for all of this --yeah right)

I haven't smelled it yet, but Colleen sells as soap called Leatherneck which she describes as WWII fighter pilot and "smells like a man". Give it a try.

I'm waiting for my sample to arrive from her and will post my thoughts on it if anyone wants me to.

In the meantime, I'll just keep using my lavender and manicuring my nails

Colleen's Cavendish Black immediately comes to mind. Leatherneck as well, though I haven't shaved with it yet just sniffed it longingly

Thank you steve and Ant , I meant no disparage to those who like the lavenders, the roses, the tulips, the hot bikini waxes, the gossip rounds with the girls -----just kidding I realize many a macho man has and always will love these smells, but I just prefer the deeper smells. I don't even like the smell of real roses and the like ---- I'm just a weirdo ---at least thats what people tell me. Thanks again.

I'm just having a little fun. No offense taken. It's not being a weirdo for not liking some smells. For me, many of the spicier smells seem to burn my nose so I go for the more subtle scents. That seems to go opposite most men's tastes but I guess I have an overactive sniffer.

She might even be able to make the occasional non-scented soap for you too but I don't want to speak for her.

Yeah for me, contrary to the title of the thread, it's not just about being manly, some of the more sweeter, flowery smells can bring on a migraine. I don't like migraines --nope I don't like them --- so I stay away from some smells. The only cure I've found for having a migraine while smelling like a rose garden is killing a buffalo with an exacto knife. It takes a while but I end up smelling a little bit more manly -----

What type of soap are you looking for - glycerine or milled/tallow.

In the glycerine department, I would suggest Honeybee Sue (she sells through her e-bay store only). Her soaps have shea butter, clay and loads of other good stuff. She has lots of great scents - I have sandalwood, amber and cedarwood amber - all masculine (I also have lavender!).

Mama bear sells similar soaps (I haven't tried them, but they've gotten very good reviews over at B&B) and has lots of very masculine scents available.

QED USA (e-tailer) sells glycerine soaps that are scented with essential oils only - they are strongly scented and can cause skin irritiation - I have bay rum (makes my face tingle - so if you have sensitive skin, best to stay away), sandalwood (the only soap I'm aware of that uses sandalwood EO - as opposed to fragrance oil - which is why it costs a bit more, B&B (a pine/cedar/sandalwood scent) and some others.

If you want a good hard tallow-based soap, Tabac just can't be beat - great soap and great classic masculine scent. You can also get the outstanding aftershave, which is almost strong enough to use as a cologne.

Most important, all of these soaps shave well - as well as smell great.

I've not tried Colleen's soaps, but they get good reviews.

Thanks, Suzuki, I have the Honeybee Spa Sandalwood and I like it very much. I've ordered the Tabac and hope to like it. Right now, I think I'm a sandalwood man.

Honeybee has also unscented, afaik - for you should be no brainer.

Good choice for Tabac, too. C&E Nomad also has a manly scent (imo) but it may irritate your skin and Ilija thinks it dries too fast=POS.

Then you MUST try the sandalwood from QED - not cheap ($15 for a very generous tub or $10 for a smaller stick).

It's a basic glycerine soap (no shea butter, clay, etc), but nothing beats the pure EO sandalwood scent - without a doubt the best sandalwood product I have every used.

Mama bear also makes a Mysore sandalwood soap scented with fragrance oils that is supposed to be pretty good as well.

Try other "woody" scents - I like the pines and cedars and the amber is nice as well - different and sligtly smokey.

Lavender is surprising masculine - not a flowery scent at all - a very green, herbacious scent that has more in common with rosemary than rose. There's a reason why its one of the most popular scents for men's shaving products.

Try it - you might like it! If you do, find a soap that's scented with EO's as they tend to have better, stronger scents - not sweet at all.
