Sounds like someone re-discovered Naugahyde, the cruelty-free fabric made from the shed hides of the Sumatran Nauga: http://www.naugahyde.com/history.html

Cool website Robert but I'm not using the rare Naugas <g> This is a much different material.

remember that stuff they were using as a shoe leather substitute a few years back? I think it was named Corfram or something like that. It was real popular in military circles because it always looked well shined. How about that?

    Tony,
Just curious, this material you are trying that has all this draw, how is the upkeep? I imagine it wouldn't have to be conditioned like leather, then?

    John,
No upkeep whatsoever. Clean it up with soap and water, strop in the shower, whatever. It does come in different textures and hard or soft versions.
Looks promising for those who prefer a non-leather product or who are simply high tech nuts. I could use stainless Dee's and screws and the thing could be used in the pool!

I would love a vegan strop to compliment my horn handled TI, super badger brush, and Tabac (animal fat) soap!

Just kidding, I think this is a cool idea. It will actually compliment the Men-U synthetic brush.

    Good luck on this.

As a mostly-vegetarian, (I make exceptions for German cuisine; SpƤtzle can only be adorned in so many ways) I think the idea is a great one. Will the costs be relatively on par with the leather counterparts or somewhat higher? Or have you not got that far yet?

I wonder if something like neoprene could be used?

I have visions of Tony going round all the shops with his pockets full of razors and a little notepad now. Furtively slipping out a razor and stropping it on every likely piece of material he finds.
I'd like to see someone explaining that away if they were caught by an assistant, especially if it was in something like a lingerie dept.

I don't think it will vary much from leather prices as the raw matrial is about equal in cost. less waste of course so we will see. They will still be made by hand as always. I don't think this will be any big seller but when I saw the material I remembered a few guys asking about this idea so thought I would bounce the idea around first and see if these was any interest.

I'll send off a sample for testing, get a little more product info and post in the vendor section when and if I have these as a product. Right now I'm just gathering ideas.

    Thanks,
    Tony

While I'm not giving up my leather strops any time soon, this is an interesting concept.

I'm thining that it might make a good travel strop, as it might not be as prone to creasing (from being packed), resistant to the stresses of travel (altitude, humidity, water, etc.). I suspect that the draw could be lightened by using some sort of wax (vs. oil), but that everyone would have to experiment for themselves.

    Keep us posted Tony.
