Thanks for starting this thread. It will help some of the new guys to realize that there are a bunch of different options available.

I mentioned the Friable Stone Slurry because I think it is interesting and very possible the slurry acting as a paste can be much finer, higher grit than the stone it came from . I find that interesting an entertaining for honing.

But what Brooksie is talking about is completely different, at best your slurry is 10-20k grit. Brooksie is finish stropping on 120K grit CBN that is second in hardness to Diamond.

.50 and .125 CBN when used in concert with Chrome Oxide and Cerium after finish honing in the 7-10K range will leave a stria free bevel and a smooth straight edge unlike Poly Diamond. 20K – 120k edges are light years apart.

I have been experimenting with the method described by trondsi after a couple of PMs with great results, works for me, and all with materials i already had. The leather seems to cushion the grit somehow making it finer.

If anyone is trying to duplicate the OP's results they need to remember that the specific substrate used to hold the abrasive has to be exactly the same or else the results will be different. The same weave/grade/type of nylon seat belt, the same paper and leather. As we know leather varies considerably. Water buffalo leather has a different pore structure than cowhide or horsehide. Then there is also the method of tanning used and the all important type of finishing of the leather. Some leathers have a hard, tight finish which prevents the abrasive from being lodged into the leather. With that type of leather a person needs to sand off the finish first. Then the abrasive can be held in place by the leather.

I do take issue with pasting both sides of a "strop". IMHO, there will be, eventually, a transfer of abrasives from one side to the other. I much prefer a single abrasive on each strop and each to be placed into separate bags. That is what I do with my paddle strops.

The frequency of using the strops is a major issue for new guys so it was good of Euclid and the OP to clarify the frequency and the number of laps used.

    Just my 2¢

The only thing I put on my strop is lather, and plenty of it. about once every two months or when I get bored and have nothing else to do. I like draw and this increases it mightily. One does have to wipe the residue off the blade from time to time but it really helps. I do allow the lather to dry overnight and wipe off the excess, but there will be some residue on the blade anyway. Kleenex takes it right off and the draw is improved. I rub it in as well with the palm of my hand. I'd use the soles of my feet but I can't reach that far anymore.

There are/were quite a few guys using slurry off of just about every stone out there on strops..

The general consensus was that it works quite well within reason...

I have never found any agreement at all on Pastes, even in this thread we have people from the "No Paste" camp to the ".125 CBN" camp, from what I have read over the years on this forum I doubt that ever will be any consensus there are just way to many variables to consider...

What I do like is that more people are testing the Longevity issue, I found a few years back that Pastes can take an edge quite far...

Another week of shaving off the .125 and the shaves are still incredible. I've been doing 4 -10 laps before each shave and that seems to be all that is needed!

Brooksie, Are you running your blade over CBN prior to each shave? or did I miss something. Earlier, you posted that you only do that when it degrades...?

I have Ken's .010 spary. I haven't used any pastes or spray in some time.
I honed a razor last, and for the first time, in a long time I hit my wool felt w/.50 diamond, followed by .10 CBN on Balsa. I really like the CBN on Balsa. I'm looking forward to today's shave.

Might break out some of the good shave cream.

FWIW, I used to hear that frequent use of pastes and/or sprays leads to rounded edges and convex bevels. Anyone have an opinion on that. Is it a falisy, or is there some truth to it.

After talking to Marty I decided to do a few laps before each shave. Apparently the blade will keep getting better and better so we'll see how that goes.
