You can buy lead weights for trimming model sailplanes from any RC hobby shop. They come in strips about ¾ in X1/4 in with double stick tape on the back. About $5 for two 6 in strips.

Stick 3 inches on a paint stir stick and you are good to go.

    1. After reading this thread, went on ebay and bought some 3/4 x 3/4 x 3 inch ingots - $5 with shipping.
Filed/smoothed them to resemble the Griffon.
The pure lead was pretty hard. Using it on a strop was almost like 2K sanding - only no concern about leaving residual grit.
The 50% lead/50% tin (pewter) was notably softer, but much more aggressive than using glass. Think this be a useful tool for occasional strop conditioning.

    2. I am a physician with familiarity with lead.
Lead is most dangerous when inhaled - ie smelting vapors or grinding dust.
It can also be well absorbed if ingested - ie paint chips.
It is not really absorbed by skin contact. Should not be an issue to handle ingots or to have some rubbed on a strop.
My father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.

And there you have it, from a Physician, so smoking it has been fine all along - just like I told you guys....sheesh!

Great way to refresh a razor and polish it up nice and shiny as well, wipes away all those stains and residue as well.

    Thanks Doc!

There is handling lead, and then there is "handling" lead. You know those Carnival games with the machine guns that spit bb's out? Those bb's are actually lead shot.

You didnt want to be the guy tasked with emptying the bins behind the game at the end of a weekend. They gave no respiratior, not even a paper mask, and you shoveled them by hand into buckets. (buckets into barrels, and barrels carted off to the scrap yard) Your fingers were turned completely black in the process, and I'm not sure if it actually came out after you scrubbed hard for 3 days, or if your skin just wore off at that point.

More years than I want to admit casting my own bullets and now three years and counting stropping on lead with no ill effects. Of course I'm not counting the little slit-like openings behind my ears and my inexplicable ability to now breathe under water...
