I find myself needing to recommend strops to folks new to using a straight. These folks aren't hobbyists, so I want to recommend new manufacture.

Currently, I recommend a Whipped Dog starter strap to start with before moving to a quality strop. I have a quality strop, though I think the maker may be getting out of the business.

Not sure if this is true, though I think of a good strop being $75 plus.

    Please educate me!

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I have tried to find whipped dog but it the page gives me a 404 error page not found. Anyone knows where you can get the poorman's strop?

The Tony Miller beginner strops are downright reasonable and great quality.

I agree completely. Anyone shopping for a new strop should check his work out. He delivers what he promises, and you WILL be happy. I have SRD, Tony Miller, and several other strops of recent vintage. His are the best for the money! They can be found on his site: https://heirloomrazorstrop.com

Plus 1 on the Tony Miller strops. My 1st was one of his 3" latigos (though it's a little more draw than I like these days) . I'm of the school of thought that if you start out with a fine strop and are VERY careful while learning, you won't chop it up so much-at least I didn't.

They include: a Razor Emporium latigo that replaced my Parker, a SRD kangaroo strop that, unfortunately is cupped, a Razor Emporium russet horsehide strop (a wonderful strop), a Tony Miller fast bridle (also a wonderful strop) and a Griffith Shaving English shell cordovan. The shell cordovan was expensive and I love using it, but I can't say that it does significantly better than my other strops.

My only disappointment was with the SRD kangaroo strop. I was hoping to purchase new leather for the strop and use the old roo for a paddle strop, but SRD has not had any roo leather for a while and it does not seem that they ever will. Bummer! Sourcing kangaroo leather in the states is not easy.

From your experience which one of the three your recommend?

    Thank you

I have been using a Tony Miller fast bridle as my go to strop for years.
    Still performs like day one.
Superb quality and value for the dollar.

Torolf at Scrupleworks also makes some very fine high quality artisan strops, IIRC he's located in Norway

I enjoy mine greatly, he's been wonderful to work with ime
