Of course its not the ultimate. Just one alternative. Those are nice to have.
Like last night, when a single crappy old Solingen argued me into using the Sun Tiger to set the bevel.
Synthetics will not become my religion now but it is a way and its good to have many ways.

Its like we often say, what works for one person, may not necessarily work for another, or YMMV etc, and thats the way it goes.

If we were all alike and did everything exactly the same as each other, shaving with a straight would be no different than slapping on some canned goop and shaving with a Scmuck16.
I see then. So only those people who it works for should comment. Or actually, no one should comment at all? And, when any of us do a thread commenting about another hone or hones or methods, then no one should comment as the thread or video is just about sharing that result.

Many did this in the original non video thread, and cost us a contributing senior member, quite possibly more than just one.
That is exactly the point. I never dismissed the findings. Indeed, I liked them and tried them on different media. My only point continues to be that the method works and I think it's cool, but I don't think it is the most consistent method out there.

Newbies should experiment. Honing is difficult enough for some people though and many newbies become frustrated not only with why won't this razor hone up for me as I have been doing knives and tools my whole life and they quit trying. Same for some shavers sometimes, but we encourage them with all the tricks we know.

I made a video using the coticule when it was the most effective polisher for me. I have never told anyone not to try one or two or ten.

There seems to be some large degree of misunderstanding here.

    Thanks,

    Lynn

Exactly this was teaching new people?
Now to start hone and finish honing in the coticule will take same time and afford to compare using Norton 4k/8k?

I don't think so , Coticule will take exact time and afford which Norton or dmt or many more options which is available out there to get job done.
if we wanted help new people lets teach them easiest way and let them get started.
this is was my opinion and i was trying to explain this.

I am a Newbie and was having mixed results with the Norton 4k/8k, I had a few razors I just couldn't get good enough or was having non-repeatable results.

I tried the "One Coticule Method" on seven razors. Three that I was having problems with and four I got at antique stores just for this test.

    Here's the results

Antique store Boker King Cutter $10 - bought very dull
I got it very sharp, it's now one of my favs

Henckels 60 1/2 - very problem razor for me and could never get it sharp.
Now it's very sharp and in my rotation.

Antique store Diamond Spark $7 - dull to start
    Now very shavable

Antique store John Pritzlaff Hde Co. $10 - dull to start
    In my rotation now

Double Arrow ok to start with
still just ok after - no change

Antique Store Union Cutlery $5 - Dull
Got it to passable, not great

Wade & Butcher - Not great
Could not get it at all, re-honed with Norton 4k/8k, c12k, got it VERY sharp (my first real success with nortons,c12k) .

For me the Coticule gives me great feedback which I'm just now starting to get on the synthetics. I will probably try this method first on any antique store/ebay razors I buy from now on or until I get better with synthetic hones.

To recap four razors BIG improvement, two no change, one made it worse or would take to long to hone. This seems to work best on German type hollow grounds, not so well on wedges (on my stone at least)

I think the One Coticule Honing should be moved to Advanced honing as then It wouldn't be for beginners.
I like Coticule honing but it does take more learning than 4/8 Pyramids. The slurry consistency and difference in sample rocks takes getting use to.

Marcus, your coticule would be more appropriate for Bruno's ax.

I really like this method and I appreciate it's simplicity - honed my first three and very different razors with this video and I could not be happier with the results. As I see it, the majority who've tried it accept it works, so can we please this to a YMMV and move on?

Life, gentlemen, is simply too short.

As much as I love this method I have recently moved to the DMT-E for bevel setting following the BBW slurry and the coticule water method Bart has in the Wiki. I feel it is much more consistent in developing a good bevel than the coticule with slurry. My coticule cut very quickly, blackening the slurry in about 20 strokes, but some razors didn't take and edge that well with the method. I feel it takes a ton of experience to get a bevel set quickly with a coticule. So far the razors I have gotten good edges with, using this method, have lasted, and I love the shaves. The razors that wouldn't get a good bevel after an hour or so I moved to the DMT, BBW, coticule method and I got good edge off those in the matter of 20 minutes.

If you want to do it all on one stone, a fast coticule can definitely do it. I also don't want to waste all my coticule on developing bevels when I have a DMT and a BBW sitting around the house. I really like those "stones" and I missed using them.

All in all, I miss Bart's posts as his threads were my favorite on this site. His theories and insight on honing taught me more than anything else I have read or seen on here. He was a very valuable member here and I hope he returns with more sometime.
