    Default First 3 Pin razor restore - Dubl Duck Goldedge

    I bought this razor some months ago and put it aside while doing other restores and such.
    Now I am ready to take the plunge and give it a new lease on life.
    I did a write up about this razor in Show and Tell a little while ago and showed some pics too
    http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...-goldedge.html

    Yesterday I started the unpinning process and managed to unpin it without damaging the scales
    Pics cause we all like them are below
    Sorry about the camera shakes making some pics blurry

    Is that gold plate around the pivot or rust? Looks like a combination of both to my untrained eye.

    @JReed
    It looks like it is the remains of Gold wash which (I have read) would have been on the monkey tail when the razor was manufactured. There is also some rust there too. I am thinking of finding somebody who can do the Gold wash effect to make it more like it would have from the factory. That decision is still a long way off yet.

    @ne0nblakk Thanks mate, this one could take some time to finish.

    Member mycarver can gold plate/wash but he is in Bethlehem PA. That's a far distance from Australia. Good luck to you. Nice razor if you can save it.

    @mrsell63

    Thanks for your comments Jerry. When the time comes and if I decide to go with it I may well contact mycarver about a Goldwash treatment. If possible I would try to keep the job in my local area - time will tell.

    From what I have seen using a loupe and all appears well with the edge (no swiss cheese, just 1 small nick in the edge) laid flat on each side of my 325 Diamond hone (slight sign of a warp on the toe end) and a general visual look, it ll appears like a doable resrtore. The only other issues found so far are medium level hone wear with a slightly heavier hone wear on the toe end, small amount of pitting near the spine, soap scum or similar residue that scrapes off with a fingernail, and some general discoloration possibly from age and normal use.
    This week I am getting some aluminium plate and making up a press for the scale straightening job. More to follow.

    Hey rickybeeroun222, not sure if you have hit youtube but there a few videos on home made electrolysis kits. I have also looked at making the gold solution as well but am not game enough yet. May be worth giving 10pups a shout, apparently he quacks in his sleep he has done that many ducks. Have a look at some of his work for info on authentic looks if you have not come across him. Good luck with the duck mate and keep us posted.
    A good lather is half the shave.

    i had good luck straightening my gold edge scales with just a hair dryer. they say that moisture and heat contribute to the deterioration of celluloid (which is a problem with these). Don't want to get cell rot any sooner than you have to.
