Very nice, your learning still.
Its most imperative, that the inside of the scales be perfectly flat from the beginning, as well as the wedge. Always make your wedge a bit larger than the scales, this allows room for finishes to be applied.
Then you can mock up with micro screws , and fit the wedge with that nice, clean n tight look. I prefer the use of a file.
If you sand through the finish, just touch it up, let dry, sand and finish....Done.!
