Thanks, Tom. I'm just trying to learn to get "closer" to what outback puts out, but I don't think my hands can handle it very often. At least I saved a great named, oldie.

Looks good Jerry. It seems like you managed to kill a little hone wear.
It's not agreeing with a bevel set but it's close now. 2 layers of tape is making it a 24-degree edge. :dropjaw: Just the tip of the toe to go. Still a wide bevel but even.
Thanks Shaun.
I won!

Had to straighten out the tip a little but bevel is set. Done for tonight. Time to clean up and check out the radio for a bit before bed. Goodnight all. Who am I kidding? Only people on the other side of the world are up at this time. LOL.
Getting close on this one. First set of scales, first wedge, first collars. I'm happy with the blade and scales. Still have a little work to do on the collars. Mostly I'd like an opinion on the wedge. I used the thickness of the one it came with as a starting point and added thrust washers (00 wide flattened to about 0.020"). The scales at the pivot end had a large gap I didn't care for. Probably because I didn't account for the extra thickness at the pivot when I cut my wedge to thickness. Removed the washers (didn't have them originally) and it looks like it fits well. The blade seems to sit a bit low, so I might thin the wedge a bit. So does anyone see any adjustments before I start the final finish work?

Did you say your pivot washers were causing a gap?
Others will have better advice, but I would suggest leaving just a little extra on the outside edges of the wedge so if there is a gap between the lead and scales you can try to tap the lead and get it to fill the void. I would ask someone more experienced before trying though and risking damaging those scales. Nice job by the way!
Also, update on the firehose project. I may have ONE section completely clean soon. I think detergent is all that is coming out in the water now so I will have to add a little vinegar to the water to help get it out.
If you are using a true 'wedge, you must tighten the bottom good and bend the pivot together to pin at the top. I use scotch tape to hold it together.
I predict you will at least lose that pointed end after a bit and round the top of the scales off shorter.
looks a bit not stropping-friendly?
It’s hard to sand a wedge very flat. By nature they tend to have i very tiny crown. I always get mine flat with a file. If you are really good with a file you can make them concave ever so slightly. I’m not there yet, but keep working at it. The concave will also help the wedge snuggle into the scales. After most of it is finishe you can tap the edges to get the to bulge a wee bit and snug up as JP5 suggested.
A demo is worth a million words!
