The nagura falls out for sure, but the main stone is press fit. I think they call it a french fit or something like that. It also stays closed fairly well, so not sure I need the latch but my dad said it would make it look more finished. It is nothing special, but I think for what I started with and how it turned out I did alright. My dad says he knows this wood place in Worchester he'll take me to, so I'll go and see what they got, I have like four more stones that could use homes.
I made some wood boxes a couple of years back. I just used a router. Easier than the hammer and chisel. Mine were made to hold the stone but remove the stone to use it so no press fit. I used magnets to keep the lids on but no hinges or latches.
You did a fine job making the box. It will only get better from here. Keep up the good work and I will be watching for the next one.
The box came out well. It can be a little tricky getting the top and bottom to match while closed with irregular shaped hones. I have made a few, and also favour gauging out the lions share with a router. I am led to believe that way back when it was common to set hones in boxes with plaster of Paris I have two hones that are of uneven thicknesses that I need to make boxes for.
I haven't done this but the thought crosses my mind.Quote:

Mike got me feeling inadequate about my production so I decided I would revisit the S. Crookes & Son for a little hand sanding. I forgot to get before pictures...I think. It's been a while. Yeah, I'm a slacker. But here are some before I took it apart and just after the scales came off.

It's hard to tell sometimes what scratch patterns there are, how deep and what they will look like after the sanding begins.

Hard to see from the picture but there are some pretty persistent diagonal scratches that are hard.to get to the bottom of. Some of them may just be the grain of the steel. I have backed up to 320 to work back up. We'll see how much I can get without foiling.
