We get Max ( my 140 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback) whole ones for Christmas or just because. He will chew the knuckle off the end and start breaking big pieces off. Unreal the power that dog has in his jaws. If he can shatter cow femur imagine what he could do to a human one.

Once the big chunks start coming off Susie throws them out because they splinter. I liberate them from the garbage can and throw them in with my scale material.

They still need a little work but so far so good. I always wondered what FBU scales would look like in bone. I'm not disappointed

Great idea Paul.
I used to buy them for my Newfoundland years ago, it kept him busy while the kids opened their stuff and it was a great treat for him. Butchers shops are few where I live now but had I thought back then - scales!

Got this one shaped, smoothed and polished.

I've never worked with bone. I assume it can be dyed/stained too if you wanted?
They would really pop stained. Oil base stain may help keep from drying out too.
Tea maybe for a natural stain?
Makes me want to get a chunk now but I don't have anything that needs scales.

It's not thin like ivory scales but it's pretty thin. I might thin it out some more since it's not that flexible, take that dome off the top at least.

First time working with bone for me too, at least with making them. Shaun did some skrimshaw work that looked fantastic and i might try that sometime. With these I was going for the FBU scale look.

Yes, it can be stained but I like the natural look personally.
