What are you working on?

I've owned this George Wostenholm & Son for a few years now but haven't used it much. The scales the razor came in were just too big, wide and heavy for the blade. Ugly too. Made it very difficult to strop and hone and annoying to shave with. The razor gives a lovely close shave so I wanted to get it back in rotation. Had a set of faux tortoise scales from an old Kropp lying around that fit quite well, perhaps a tiny bit long if I'm being picky. Buffed and polished the blade, reprofiled the heel and gave the scales a light sanding and buffing. Pinned up and now back in the rotation.Attachment 333777

Those Wosty pipe razors won’t win beauty contests, but they are great shavers.

Nice job on the scale swap. Balance is important, it makes everything better. Those razors have a great reputation.

Yeah those scales look much better on that razor than those clunky yellow things. I have a couple of pipes and they take a wicked keen edge. Nice work. I like the shine you got on those scales.

I've spent the last ... 5 months? developing a technique to do pressed horn scales. Heat plays a role, but it's primarily a chemical method.

Once I've got a functional set of scales (I'm still working out a way of making them re-harden faster), I'll post in detail. Here's some of the tests I did leading up to it.
