We have a pretty big circle, if you think about it! :)
And think about how big that circle could get. . . .
Tweaking the design on the bowl a bit tonight.
Didn't have a lot in the tank tonight. Fighting the local union is exhausting sometimes.
When it's not fun, step away from sharp and or spinny things.

It's all about the postage, Shaun. All about the postage!

That's funny Tom.
Mike, you should get PSAC as a union, they just roll over every time, even when there is obvious legal violations.
I do

Good job on that repair Tuzi. I know that one probably used that piece on the end to hold the scales together but I have had great success before repairing horn scales broken on the wedge end because you can also use the ca like you did, especially if the scale is broken right over the wedge. I have ca'd the wedge to the broken scale after repairing that scale making it even stronger. For horn dust I have used my Dremel & got a broken piece of horn & used a grinding bit, grinding in one spot, making a pile of dust. I then scooped it up & put it in an old empty Rx bottle until needed.
I don't regret getting my small drill press. I was waiting on the led light to use it but it works great! It's nice to be able to drill a pin w/o the the piece being drilled moving. I would do it by hand using a cordless drill I have & sometimes my hand would move or I might be slightly off angle. This is nice with the clamps holding the razor in place.

My buddy not far from here who loves straight razors asked me if I had a spare wedge & I told him I'm sure I do. He helped me out with a ride a couple times when I didn't have any wheels. I have a Frederick Reynolds that has a broken scale & the other piece is missing, so I'm unpinning it & will either find more scales or make some for it, but it's a heavy wedge like he wants.
They used to get me to drill out broken bolts at work because I could do it pretty good. It was usually broken exhaust studs that would break & I drilled out quite a few! I also have left handed drill bits because sometimes they would grab & unscrew the stud right out of the head.
I's slightly off center but it will be okay. Once pinned, it won't even show if I did touch the inside of the collar.
That's gonna be a great shaver, for your buddy. I've got one like yours, but not as nice.
I have two of these Mike. It's the Prince Arthur's Royal Razor with a crown in the center with a V on the left & R on the right of the crown. He's getting the better one. My other one isn't as wide but I don't mind giving him that one. He wanted a heavy wedge & I like doing that.
It worked out just fine. Didn't harm the collar as you can see it still sitting on top of the scale. Above is a set of tortoise scales that came off an E.C. Simmons Keen Kutter which the blade was trash. Those scales have some bug bites inside & I'm going to fill 'em ca & I think I have another Keen Kutter I can use the blade from. If not then I'll use a different blade but I try to use original maker parts. I'm also going to make some scales for that MOP covered tang Clark Brothers blade I showed not long ago.

The case I wanted to put the Packwoods in arrived and it's too small :gaah: Oh well, I can use it for others. Now the search continues for a case that will fit them...
Taking one apart for cleaning.

Something as big as that pair of Packwoods would likely need a repurposed 7-day box.
Just saying....

Dr. Mikenstein, Tombles, I love these names everyone is getting! Lol
A little back round on Mr. Diller and Dr. Mikenstein. On Monday I was going to shave with my Isaac Diller. When I opened the razor to shave, one of the old scales broke at the hinge pin. I sent a PM to outback and we decided to go with new scales. Today was some good natured joking around in the SOTD about Mike raising Mr. Diller from the dead and Mike's avatar.
OK.!
The scales have been washed, but still need polished.
The blade is all cleaned up, and ready for assembly.
I started by cutting off the active rust with a SE razor blade.

Then finished it off with 3M metal restorer/polish, and a rag wheel in the dremmel.

It has some pits, but I can live with it.
Especially now that I know it's NOS.!!
Nothing more than a factory edge, with no signs of touching a stone on the spine. It also had no washers between the tang n scales, with no visible wear from opening and closing, except from me opening it with the rust that was present.

Some of the pieces I've been working on in the last few months. Plain steel razor is 80CrV2 to be paired with toxic green Kirinite scales. The fine lined damascus kami is a smidge under 8/8 and is a pure wedge. The smaller ones are a lot lower layer count and around 5/8 and hollow ground.
How are you going to hone the pure wedge. In theory a pure wedge has zero hollow grinding and the bevel would be from spine to edge, unless I'm missing something.
You know, those occasional dark rays in it are really pretty unusual. Could it be red alder? Are you on the Pacific coast?
It'd be really interesting to see what that would look like sanded really smooth and given a couple coats on something glossy. Sometimes rays like that have different refractive properties than the surrounding wood and you can get a really cool depth effect.
Good job cleaning that blade up Mike. Too bad it was abused considering it's NOS.
FWW, I learned the hard way that the edge of the tape layers nearest the edge of the blade is the defining surface of the blade angle.
I found that I could easily cut the tape parallel with the edge by using a razor blade against a "L" shaped bent tin guide that fitted against the spine and was the with of the saved tape and did the same to both sides of the blade.
YMMV

Allright! A little head-start on this weekend's move.
Stuff layered a bit. Some good stuff under the top layer....

Off with the towels....Some sorting. This stays, this goes......

SO much dust! Coff!
Temporarily on a shelf, some stuff to keep.

A pile of scales and an 'unpin' pile!

Then, some horse-trading/selling fodder.....I would like to know how much dough I have in all this. Perhaps not! :rofl2:

Back in the back I found the precious...That domed-top box is full of nice ivory Sheffields. I cannot find the key to the box! :rofl2:

Oh well...It's a start toward reorganization. Big chore!
See how bad it gets? :roflmao
Tom, need some help? :D
I was kidding but you never know. Looks like you have a good sized stash. Awhile back I started trying to put the same makes all in the same place & not all are in the right place but most are. I have a few plus I too have my stash of ivory. I do need to organize them more like you're doing.
And this is nearly complete.
Decided to keep it simple, as the wood is pretty dreamy.

Still need to seal the label into the lid bottom, (good idea Tom) and maybe one more coat of polyurethane which I ended up going with, as someone suggested.
