Talking old wedges, cleaning up a overhoned Wosty, tnite.

A bit of 4&600 greaseless, then 400 WD around a eraser with oil and a few hours of hand sanding has this side lookin good....well, ya can't see it anymore, but we all know its still there. :rofl2:
Attachment 313421
Many hours yet tago. :gaah:
Looking good! When setting the bevel, some spots will come-in sooner, Jelly. You have to realize that those spots will need to begin again so that the others can catch-up. If a spot is too sharp and the rest dull, I have no choice but to dull the sharp ones?
The outcome should be a smooth honing stroke with every bit of the blade passing off the bevel-setter.
Part tinfoil and part pocket-knife is not gonna work!
Keep your elbo up, Jelly. Don't let it fall below the hone. Hone with your finger tip's, don't grab the blade....float.!

Ok, thanks for all the input. I do have a little wider area near the heel. As far as I can see/feel the edges have met, but it's really hard to see on this thin of a grind. I'll really back of on the pressure and just be patient with it. Of course, the light stuff is where I have the most difficulty. Guess it's time to learn some more ;)

This thread has some really great loupe pictures to see when the apex is fully developed.
Thanks for the link RezDog.
I'd read that post before, but it was a good re-read. I forgot about the marker trick. Tried it tonight and it worked a charm. The bevel was much easier to see and was really close. Did about 50 super light laps checking every 20 or so. The bevel evened out and is definitely meeting. Time for the 4K...
Do yourself a favor and watch Glen's (gssixgun) latest YT video, "Naniwa 12k SR Refresh." He uncovers a few SR myths and shows a kamisori honing stroke used on a western grind razor. Between that one and his x-stroke, I found the video very helpful even though I'm honing through a full progression like yourself. :)

Several hrs./days later...... Wosty is alive.!!

Besides the small amount of grinding below the spine with greaseless, the rest was done by hand. Even polishing with emory, rouge, and Flitz, by hand.
Threw on a few layers of tape, check the bevel.
Nice width, fairly even, honed up nicely, splitting hairs upon approach. I'm happy.!

Very nice! That looks fantastic. You've got me all excited to start on the Wosty I picked up a couple of weeks ago.
I think the C-Mon edge may have come in really nice. I'm letting the beard grow a bit for the test shave this weekend. I've got a feeling that blade is going to sing and talk.
On my Sunday i dug up a synthetic knot that needed a home. Went to Goodwill and found a wooden candle stick. Cut t up and sanded. One coat of Tru-oil then dipped it in some poly to seal the crackes and all. Glued the knot and not its ready to be part of my shave this evening.

Nice job on the Wosty, Mike. Sounds like a lot of work you did to that one.
Awesome save, outback!
Yeah, Jelly, those American CMons sing, ring, and crackle on the strop. Makes you think you broke it!
Jerry, that is a cool idea. What wood is that?
Tom, i dont have a clue. But the bottom shows the rings from the limb. Like it was a thin limb and turned to shape. I hacked off the top of it.
Just had my shave and the handle feels bulky but not too bad. The knot is extra soft to the face but has enough backbone to work just great. It will go into my usable rotation.
Maybe one of our wood guys might have a clue from this end shot...

looks like cedar to me.(Good idea for a brush handle btw)
Great idea for a brush handle, Jerry! And Mike, I love your Wosty restore-is that some kind of swirly acrylic for the scales? I dig it. Sadly, I've had a big chopper Wosty on my own workbench for weeks now-I just haven't had the time to finish it. Hopefully soon-you guys keep me inspired!
Seems to be, Aaron. I'd much rather see it in its original horn, but that's what was on it. Its one of several razors, that gasman sent to be fixed up for the giveaways. Ones that are a bit above his pay scale. :rofl2:
I'm keeping a record of any that need odd taping, and honing strokes, should one surface. Old wedges can be a lot of fun, ya know..:banghead:
Got a good start on my Wosty.
Set a rough bevel and got a couple of small chips out of the edge. Is it just this blade or do Wosty's have really hard steel? I spent a lot of time with my 600-800ish stone to finally get the edge fixed, it reminded me of Genco/Geneva steel.
I also got the scales off without damage, so I've got a fairly nice set of Robeson 35H350 if anyone needs them. The pin that was used was steel so it was a little more of a challenge to get out.
Attachment 313488
Sorry Sharptonn, this ones not going to be shiny...it's got a bit of devil spit. As hard as this steel feels I think it would break me to try and get it out by hand.
Some blades start out almost impervious to sand paper. After a bit they do start to sand a little quicker.
Makes one think of case hardening. There was a thread on case hardening a few years ago.
Jelly, go to town on it. It should do ok and shine up.
I'll drop down to 220 and give it a go.
Maggards are having a sale!!

The boss was rooting around and found this little booger.

An 11/16 JR Torrey in sad shape. Looks like I'll give it a bit of a clean and see how it hones up.
Bob
There you go again enabling, Roy! And Bob, speaking of Torreys, I just finished up that identical blade in pearloid acrylic faux-tortoise shell scales with brass hardware. Tom had generously included a set of twin Torreys with a recent strop purchase, and I have been piddling with them off and on. Here are a couple of quick pics on the deck:

Fellas, it had been tool long. I had myself a grand time on a rainy Saturday in my shop yesterday, and finished it up today while cranking Waylon and Willie on the bluetooth. I love this Incudo acrylic from the British supplier Rothko and Frost. You guys should check them out if you don't already have them bookmarked-they have some really unique stuff: https://www.rothkoandfrost.com/mater...e%5B29%5D=1576
I've still got this one to do to complete the set; it will get silver hardware and the gray/smoke colored pearloid acrylic:

It's good to take a break from grading essays now and again!
Nice scales ScoutHikerDad! Thanks for the link, they've got some pretty wild patterns.
Rolodave: thanks for the little push on my Wosty. 220 and cork backer did the trick. I'm still not going to get all of the spit out, but I got a lot more than I thought I would.

I've got 6+ hours in and am pretty happy with where it's at. Time to start moving up the grits.
Lookin good, Jelly. 6+....wait till ya get done, then add um up. I put almost 25 hrs. into that last Wosty, and I cheated a bit with greaseless. Still...its all up to u, on how far u want to go. Some pitting, is just too deep and not worth chasing when hand sanding. Gonna look better than it did, though.
Nice scales A A Ron, you have some nice material stashed away.
Bob are you sure those old scales are Ok. (It appears tintin is faster than I)
Jelly the Wosty is coming around.
I don't doubt the time you put into that Wosty, looks really good.
There's several I have with 20+ into them, the Fredrick with the crack probably took that long just to find clean steel at the edge. Not complaining, I kinda like the challenge. Though sometimes I need to be reminded not to be lazy.:)
I have a lot of pairs, and I like making boxes. I have been working on recreating a dilapidated old box that I have. The latch evades me and I have settled on these latches from Lee Valley. The rest of the box is pretty close to the way the old one was made.

Wow, really nice. Is that leather wrapped? Either way, beautiful home for a pair.
Yes, leather wrapped and as traditional, a leather hinge. I have a number of pairs that I am building boxes for, and I am going to make a seven razor box as well. I may recover a few old boxes as well, like the model for this box. I need to order some more leather and latches. The 1mm leather is my target. The thicker stuff takes way too long to skive down to get it to roll well and lap with no bulges.
A day late, but I did a light restore/ clean up on this Heljestrand, amongst all the thanksgiving festivities.
Attachment 313698
Removed from its ivory grips, active rust cut free with a SE blade, sanded with 600 WD, emory on a felt wheel in the dremmel, cleaned with 3M, polished with Flitz.
Plenty of pitting left behind, just wanted it cleaned up, and a bit more presentable.

Honed up quickly, shave was incredibly close n smooth, this morning, and pleased it made SOTD, today.
Awesome job, Mike-I'm managing to get in some good shop time myself this long weekend-the Wosty in the top right is getting camel bone scales with turquoise recon wedge and brass hardware. I may try to finish it up tomorrow.
Under the heading of shop tips, the sleeves of 2"x2" gauze pads I got last summer on Amazon turns out to have a thousand uses in the shop: quick coats of Tru-Oil or other finish, then toss. Grab 1 to wipe off a little excess epoxy. Use it like a tac rag with mineral spirits to get the sanding dust off of wooden scales. Wipe polishing compound off a blade with acetone, whatever. They certainly don't replace good old shop towels (or old t-shirts and tighty-whities!), but they're great when you just need a quick, small pad you can toss.
Attachment 313714
nice save gents. Mike, I have one of those dannamore blades.
Really good steel that!
:tu
I bring all the expired gauze home from work, it’s great in the shop. Incidentally it expires because the packaging gets allegedly too old. It still works great.
Got my Wosty ready for pinning.
It still has a few pits, but it's a lot better than it was. I only took it to 1500 so it's got a slightly satin finish. It's hard to see in the pics, but I blued the scallops in the spine. I shortened up and slightly modified some streaked horn scales I had from a previous project. I'm going to go with some red guitar pics for the wedge, I like the splash of color. I'll use some of Austin's brass domes at the wedge and make slightly smaller brass domes from 00 wide washers for the pivot.

Looking forward to getting this on the hones.
Great to pop back in here, and see all the good work being done.
