I finish on a Thurigan, and very pleased with the results. I used to use cr-ox after the 12000 Nani, but now its straight to leather from the Thurigan.

Well, I'm going to compare the results. Of course the test will really be between my coticule and this Thuringian. The results will be of little use to anyone else unless they use the same two stones. If I have the time I might run one of these 7 razors on my hard Arkansas just to see what the outcome is. The time it takes to hone on an arkansas might be like watching paint dry.
A Polo style handle in Faux Tortoise and Black Acrylic. Mike, I now know what your talking about. This Tortoise rod is made from some weird stuff and is extremely brittle when turning. Has a fiberglass smell to it.... roughed out the shape last night and was extremely careful with this Tortoise rod.

Polyester resin to be exact.
As brittle as amber, by itself.
Ya Mike and Mike. I've turned other polyesters and it's been ok, but this stuff seems even more brittle. Maybe I'm just off my game, but I had a tool bite in while turning this last night.... let's just say it got an ear full from me.
You're right Bolton, IIRC, polyester wet Sands like a dream
I just finished taking the Wiss out for a test shave. What a SHAVE, wish the razor was mine. I'm going to weep when I return it to my cousin.
Slow to-day and I went through the pile to find something to do which would be more fun than cleaning my office, yet not cost any money.
Found this box for 3 W&B Curley Aristos razors with the 'improved tang' with only one razor left.
Attachment 232978
Looked like my old FBU might fit, so I ran home to get it. It fit, barely, so I gathered up some red material I had and stripped out the box.
Attachment 232979
Cut and sized a few panels of balsa, some spacers of basswood, a few pieces of thin foam, used some of the fabric salvaged from the bottom of the box. That little glue-tape roller thing is super for this sort of project ;).
Attachment 232980
Turned out good, I think! It is super-snug in there, yet comes out easily. Thought about removing the 'Curly' thing, but it is stamped-in, so I left it.

At least I have something to show for today!:D
Nice Tom! But I'm not surprised if turned out the way it did. You do fantastic work. Might have to get some of that fancy tape too
Making that box fit like it was meant to, not a bad day Tom.
:tu
Nice work Tom.
As usual [emoji5]
Smart work!
Too late now! :rofl2: Oh well, I will give you this Curley Aristos so you can use your 4 razor box, Steve!:)

This old greaves is in need of some love.
I'm looking for a 2 razor Mappin Lancet box...once I find that, I'll start looking for the Mappin Lancets.
I guess you did't know I posted this about 3-4 weeks ago.................

This was a 7-day set box.
I just finished honing razor #3 for my cousin. This time it was a NOS Double Duck square point. The bevel wasn't set from the factory and was so rounded I could have sat on the edge all the way back to the fatherland. Anyway I set the bevel with that 1200 of my cousins, finished it up on his Thuringian and gave it a good stropping on the SRD. She tree tops leg hair and I can't wait to grow enough beard to give it a test shave.
Razors honed for him so far are
1. used Jacob Wiss,
2. used Bismarck, and
3. the first one of two NOS Double Ducks.
Tomorrow I'll work on his NOS Boker with a barber notch and smile.
Not much for me tonite.
Cut a couple pieces of teak and birds eye maple, for scales. And pulled out a couple easy clean-ups, from the taadoo box.
Both from New York
A Top flight, that looks to be NOS, from Steve.
And a definite NOS , American razor Co. , from the flea market.
Dammit for got my pics "AGAIN"!!![emoji5]

Well, after getting the puma able to shave. I thought it needed a body as sexy as she was. Outback had an idea to do a double wood scale. I did a purple heart/zebra combo. I finished it with tru oil and finally after a week it was ready to pin. Attachment 233084Attachment 233085Attachment 233086Attachment 233087
for the wedge I did a zebra and brass wedge to highlight the two tone scales
Like the wedge the best.
Damn chef... Those came out really nice. That tru oil really made the zebra wood pop!! And the domed washers went well with them. [emoji482]
Now you can getter honed up aye.
Another in rotation.[emoji6]
Thanks, I love the way the double wood looks. Your right those domed washers look great on it. Thanks for'em. It's getting jones up tonight!
Good work, Erik! :tu Shape and size seem perfect for the blade.
One of these days I'll get around to making a set of scales like that. I've got 7 different projects going on now, and with boating season coming on strong, finding less time to get them accomplished. Might have to put the machine gun away, and pull out the semi auto, or the trusty pump action. [emoji5]
Tonight's razor wasn't much fun. A NOS Boker that took me 2 freaking hours to get the bevel set. I started out on a 1200 stone and soon saw that my progress wasn't going very far so I dropped down to an 800. It went pretty good then slowed way down. I got mad and dropped down to a 200 for 10 no pressure laps then went back to the 800 and 1200. It finally started to cut leg hair in a couple of spots on the blade so I did a pyramid progression between the 800 and 1200 cleaning and re-lapping the stones till it cut leg hair full length of the blade. After that I finished up with a good 200 laps on my cousin's Thuringian and stropped the SNOT out of the thing. It now tree tops arm hair and gets a test shave tomorrow with the Bismarck and Double Duck #1.
As a side note---> You guys must have the patience of Job to do this everyday. I can't wait until I'm done with this project so I can shave with my own razors again.
The term 'NOS' is so loosely tossed around at times. I have a Wilbert Cultery that was given to me by an old friend. While it wasn't in the original packaging, there were no signs of honing so I could have considered it NOS, but I dont'. It's just a really nice old razor that shows no signs of usage.
A few years before you joined there was an informative thread about what NOS means and not only about Straight Razors. I found it very informative at the time and still do. Check it out.

As far as the time it takes to get a razor honed. Sometimes it takes Days of working, then setting aside and then starting again. There's no 'money' in honing, only personal satisfaction and being able to help others. :tu
I'll have to count them again but IIRC there are 5 of these razors that have never seen a hone or a whisker. Having restored two antique cars, NOS parts means to me new original parts from that particular time period in their original boxes that probably came from an old dealership warehouse. That's my take on NOS.
I'm not charging my cousin to do this. It's my way of getting him on the right track to decent shaving. My payment is the satisfaction I'll get when I see his smile. Do it for anyone else?...........not on your life. Honing is a pain in the butt and I have enough razors of my own to keep up.
Yep. Roy speaks the truth. New guys need to realize the just because you HAVE a hone, does not mean you need to use it.
Just a bit on a rough hone will start you from (most times!) dead, minus, scratch! (pun intended!) :)
I'm certainly not new to honing. Been doing my own razors since I was 14. I don't have a digital camera. At almost 60 years old, I don't plan on buying one and learning how to use it. So.... pictures or it didn't happen? Well, you guys will have to take my gentleman's word of honor on it. Up here where I live we still take a man's word and seal a deal with a handshake.:)
Well, electronic handshakes are difficult. I suppose we'll settle for film prints mailed to each of us. 1 roll per razor ;)
Well....A picture IS worth a thousand words, you know.
Most of us are as old as you and much older. If you can navigate this forum, hunt and peck, you can get a cheap camera and post some pics.
WE shall help you! ;)
