Dooey do you have a lapping plate you could use wrapped in lower grit paper?
I use wet & dry on my glass plate I use for lapping for thinning most scale materials.
you could go as low as 80 grit paper to rough them thin, then go to the 180 which is i used for bone & was fairly quick (for 1 set) to get them to 2mm from about 4mm

how did you go dry grinding the bone stinks the place out nice hey

A lapping plate keeps your hones perfectly flat. You can use a large flat piece of tile (12"x12") with some 320 grit wet or dry sandpaper on it.
I believe that's the grit you use. I read on here somewhere how to do it but I have a lapping plate.

I know the smell well. I've worked bone and fossilized tusk for instrument nuts and saddles. It certainly has a distinctive odor.

Any hard flat surface will work just need it water proof for wet sanding, I also use 320-400 grit for lapping, my glass plate is a piece of tempered glass from a set of old scales

Yep, it does smell but most of the time it doesn't bother me as much as other people but I guess it is because of the final product it will turn out to be!

Sounds like a plan, I will get on that soon, just after exams. It does smell a bit, I was a little more worried about the dust, I was super itchy after I unboxed them so I kitted up with respirator, gloves goggles but I turned out okay, I'll be right with just the respirator next time. I think k it was just the bloody hay fever.

PS it still smells in the shed, hope it clears soon!

I think you meant any hard flat surface instead of furnace. My computer does the same shit & will think it's correcting you when typing out some things & will put in other words instead of what you really want to say.
