I've been lucky & barely gotten my fingernail started in them, then just pull 'em apart but then have to get the sticky stuff off.

Best ever tape was the cheap paper double back tape for carpets. Some of the older paper crepe 3M double tape were nice as the paper allowed the solvent free access to the whole bond. Some artists' mounting tapes work. No brand names come to mind though.
New improved plastic tapes are hard to unstick as the plastic backing is mostly impervious to any solvent that won't eat the scales.

Richard, you hit the nail right on the head. That is the tape I use is the kind for carpet you're talking about!

This is my current problem. But on the good side I have just finished thinning all seven sets. Still a long way to go.

    For those tuning in later:
I find that Lighter Fluid introduced into a space provided carefully by an Xacto blade slid next to a scale on one side of the tape can reduce the stickiness of the tape over a few minutes if the blade or a toothpick or thin wedge is placed into the gap.
Whatever method slowly and carefully spread the scales a small amount at a time from the wedge end with a thin wedge of wood or plastic or a butter knife.
    That has been my method.

Go to a golf store, ask for some golfclub grip tape,it is basically double sided masking tape.
The way it is used is to spiral wind it around the club shaft, wipe some paint thinner on it,slide on the grip.
On scales it is great, comes right off with Goo gone, just another way.

I like the Scotch double sided tape from the dollar store, WD40 melts the glue enough to get a small knife to separate them and it removes all the glue residue.

Making some files from paint sticks and large (closet rods size) and small wooden dowels or plastic pipe with sand paper glued to them with rubber cement makes the detail sanding and shaping go much faster and more uniform.

That's exactly how i do it! I buy the tape off eBay. It is sometimes also called carpet tape but some carpet tape is not paper. You have to make sure it is the paper tape!
