Here is a holder a buddy and I made and it uses rare earth magnets in the block fairly close to the spine stop. The main thing is the deep slots which allow work on the spine with less hassle.
Randy tells me that the slots were in use before the magnet plates.
Whatever, the block in this form works well for me.
The magnets should be set into the block close to the vertical stop for the spine, or else, a narrow blade may not be held close to the stop. Found that out on my first one.
Another tool to get a buddy with a wood shop to make.

These have been made for years, nothing new but having both types on one blockLast edited by Geezer; 01-29-2015 at 12:07 AM. Reason: deleted attachment and addded PS

These are a couple new additions to my tools. A 3 oz. chasing hammer & a tapered center punch. Even though I can make my own punches from old allen wrenches, I saw this punch & three come to a pack for $8.95 which was a deal so I got them. They're about 4 1/8" long & 3/16" thick at the top. The taper makes it much simpler to see where you center the punch on the pin. I like my six piece watchmakers hammer from Harbor Freight but this chasing hammer is polished smooth unlike the watchmakers hammer. I guess I could have sanded & polished it.

Thanked: 3215Ok here’s a few, not all are mods but tips for staying organized.
First are these little plastic boxes, don’t remember where I got them, it was on EBay from a guy that sells Dremel stuff. They were like a buck each, wish I had bought more.
Second is a ball peen hammer I modified, doming the hammer face by grinding and smoothing the edges and flattening the ball a bit and re conturing then polishing on the buffers. Gives nice control when peening.
Third are the most helpful too in the shop. I have collected and use these for years for all kinds of tasks, from cleaning guns to working on cars to cleaning razors. They are about 3/16 Th x 1/16 X 6-8 in pieces of spring steel from a street sweeper.
I find them in parking lots and in the street at the curbs where they break off the street sweeper brushes. I bevel one end to a chisel tip and 45 degree angle the other and bevel it to a sharp point. Can’t tell you how many times I have use these, I keep extras in all my tool bags and boxes, great for cleaning guns or whenever you need to get into a tight space.
Fourth is just a small 3 in diamond plate, I think this one is about 1000 grit and well worn, glued to a small pine block and a hole drilled on one end to hang on a peg board hook. Again in valuable and super handy, for touching up single edge and razor knife blades. The block is large enough, the plate does not get lost in a drawer or bag.

Thanked: 3215One more, just a plastic storage box, but I found some 1oz. plastic cups from a local fast food place, that fit perfectly in the box’s spaces and allow the lid to close. I sort my pinning washers in the cups and store in a tool box drawer. The plastic box never leaves the drawer, I just remove the cup or with the awl. I pick out just what I need.

I keep my washers & small parts in empty pill bottles but I need a box of some sort to put them all in. I like they way you have them organized. I like the way you fixed your peening hammer too. My bench grinder is too coarse but I could have used my belt sander. I should have done that but it's ok. I still might do that. It doesn't hurt to have spares.Last edited by engine46; 01-30-2015 at 09:08 PM.

Long as you can find what you need, that's all that counts.

Dollar Stores have sets of small ½" x 1.5" colored canisters with screw on tops for a buck. OR they have lots of similar things.
