Well Tom, get some sleep. Its been great to be received in such a way from all of you guys. Some dark place inside my head was saying "oh they will have written you off" and "and Tom probly thinks you ran for the border with his Henckels..." lol
You know if you would have sent maybe 2 Henckels for me to work on, I may have been in a tropical paradise right now enjoying my plunder! But alas, you only sent the one..

    Default The Butchered Blade

I don't know if this is the right thread but I need some help here.
This John Barber & son I got in the mail today has probably been re ground as can be seen in the photos. The bevel angle is just over 22 degrees at the moment.
Just take of some metal from the shoulder on both sides?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Not reground. It's called a rattler grind. It was ground from heal to toe and was a more difficult grind for the old masters to grind. Looks like it has a bit of a frown. The makers stamp looks light. Don't be too aggressive in that area. It will make a good shaver. The & Son and Norfolk address was used between 1833 and 1864.
Don't be concerned about the bevel angle and whatever you do DO NOT remove metal from the spine (or blade back as it was called back in the day) to try and correct the bevel angle. Clean it up, straighten out the frown, hone and shave test it. I think you will be surprised how well it will shave. These grinds are easier for the beginner to restore because they were ground from heal to toe and any sanding marks you make will be in the right direction. Visit the Workshop forum 'How To" lots of good information there.
    Good luck,
    Karl

Thanks for your help Karlej, I will do as advised. I have unpinned it and am cleaning up the tang area at the moment. After repinning it will honed and shave tested.
What set me off to think it was a regrind is that I haven't found a razor like while searching the net.
