Now's the right time for the "you're soaking in it" bit....
    Still not there yellow-wise..
And Benz, thx for the nice feedback on the scale shape. Copied a lot of really nice ones I've seen on here for inspiration..

Seems they take it on better and faster as steel-wooled, scotchbrited, or lightly sanded.
Staining them right after sanding to shape Tom. Still need to sand up past 1k after staining.

I agree with Tom on that one. B52, do you have a sample piece of that bone so you could do some experimenting? What if you were to put some tea in a small plastic container with the sample piece & microwave it a little bit each time to see if it starts to turn. I'm not saying to get it too hot or it might warp the scales if that were to work........just a few seconds at a time until you get it warm.
    Just a thought.

Might reheat the tea in the nuker, but not the bone I don't think. Molecular excitation and all that..

The sample piece thing is a good idea. Should have a bit of bone and the ivory handy?

B52, the guy robsbits on eBay has some cool stuff. Did you see this bone he has? Or......is that what you have?
