Nice work! I've encountered that same problem with the tang wanting to pop out of the scales. I like the painted edges.

Very nice scales! very clean, especially the collars.
If I may ask... What exactly was the process you used to finish the scales? and, how did you, and, what type of paints did you use for the edges?

I am a furniture restorer by trade. I finished the scales with a catalyzed lacquer because that is what I happened to have in my spray gun at the time. This is the finishing schedule that I used.
· sanded to 220
· clear coat, clear lacquer, sand 320
· black lacquer, I used an aerosol, masked with tape
· several more layers of clear lacquer sanded with 320 between coats
· sanded 600, then 4X steel wool and wax.
The catalyzed lacquer looks ok but does not have the clarity of CA or shellac. It is not as gray/cloudy as a polyurethane though.
The same process could be replicated with aerosols or CA. I have not tried it but I think that you could use a coat of Krylon between the coats of CA with no adverse affects. I would use Krylon brand because of the type of resins that is made of.
