Thanks guys, we have the minimum 5 so I will get cracking.
PSA - pressure sensitive adhesive, a fancy name for disks with double sided sticky tape on the back.
Larry the post is Experimenting with PSA sanding mandrel. I found lately the new post highlight in the forums is quirky. Posts look like they are old and I haven't read them. Makes it very hard to track and participate. I've been missing a lot of posts.
Regarding the disks flying off: I tried the spray-on adhesive and it worked great the same day. But when I tried the disks the next day, the adhesive was more dry and less sticky so the disks would fly off at high speeds. But that was an adhesive and not the mandrel problem. PSA disks made from profile sander rolls still work fine, but the adhesive stays on the disk and the grit only goes up to 220 so I don't want to use that.
I decided to go for the Hand American PSA sandpaper. The adhesive is on film so it's not the kind that dries up. I will experiment more with the spray on because it is much cheaper. I was hoping to get the price to $25 or below, but the flying disk are unnerving and I decided to go for the sure thing and experiment at leasure.
I used the unfinished side of the leather, sanded down with 220 grit. I found that the adhesive has a better grip on unfinished side. I would have thought it would be the opposite.
I am going to order the sandpaper and make the disks. If they fly off, then I keep the stuff and write off the cost as my experimentation expense .
If they work fine I will let you guys know where to send the money. I'll probably make up 10 kits, I have a feeling others will ask for them after the fact and it takes the same amount of effort to make 5 or 10.
I also decided to include 2 mandrels in the kit, 1 with 1/8" leather like the first one I made, has quite a bit of give and the other from 3/16" leather with very little give. You can decide which one you prefer and let me know, I will only make 2 mandrels for the first 5 kits.
Are 3/32" shanks OK? If you want 1/8" shank just let me know.Last edited by vladsch; 02-17-2006 at 01:55 PM.

That's what I thought. 10 kits will probably be spoken for before the materials arrive.

I figured I would PM you for your e-mails and whether you want a 3/32" or 1/8" shank. Then Paypal an invoice to you.
However, before that happens I will order the stuff, cut a few disks, try them out on the fastest speed I have (22,000 RPM) on my flexshaft and if all is ok then send you the Paypal invoice.
I don't foresee any problems. I have used disks cut from PSA rolls for my profile sander. However, l want to make sure that all works well with the actual product before you incur any costs.

Vlad,
This will work on the Dremel right? What size would that be? 3/32 or 1/8?

Actually for the dremel both would work. I'll make you a 1/8" because most of your bits are 1/8". The 3/32" or 1/8" is only an issue for quickchange handpieces since they don't have much in the way of size adjustment. They are designed for one size only, either 3/32" most popular or the 1/8".
