Thanked: 293I'm not interested in getting into honing just yet, but I'm curious now about how the razors I send out to honemeisters are honed specifically (i.e. what their methods are). As it was mentioned earlier, perhaps there is some merit on an individual basis to be derived from coticule finishing versus everything else (Chinese 12k, escher, pastes, etc).
I think I'd like to send a couple razors out for honing on each type. I'm still new, but this could be a nice way to find out how my face reacts to different things.

There is in fact if you go back in time you will find some posts about this by some rather smart fellows (besides me of course ) that the Wapi steel is a little different... You will also find quite a few posts about the use of pastes from me that state that certain razors like certain pastes and visa-versa... Again knowing this stuff comes from honing and stropping many, many, razors.....
There is no universal anything in razordom, pastes, stones, even razors, that could be why we have so many choices (Thank you oh mighty Razor Gods)Last edited by gssixgun; 05-15-2009 at 06:32 PM.

if you look up "newspaper" you will find some interesting stuff too
or at least you should
I have two specific razors that scream off newspaper and lots more that waste your time
since I have about 10 more Wapi s to dump....
where would I find that info you mentioned? (if you would please)

Well, I finally tried it tonight. I quickly discovered the razor has some warp to the spine Anyway, the razor gained sharpness very quickly, and seemingly unlike Lynn's initial experiences (sorry I did not read past the first page of this thread save for the parts that are now gone so I don't know who else experienced this), I found that the bevel was set very quickly.
However as I progressed, I realized the bevel was never set quite right under the bend in the razor's spine, so I went back to step 3 again. A little better. Step 3 again. A little better. Again, again, again. I should have made sure to experiment with a razor I knew had no spine issues, but then I guess the experiment would be biased....
Anyway, finally I gave up on that tiny bit of bevel that never quite set and continued on to see about the keenness, as Bart says So I did some x strokes with misty slurry with tape on the spine, and then finished on water, chromium oxide pasted leather, linen, then roo leather.
She shaved. And not bad, either, though I will give it a full shave test tomorrow morning. I am also curious to see how leaving that small bit of bevel undone will affect the razor's performance as I have never knowingly done that before...
The entire show lasted just under an hour from dulling the blade on glass to the test shave.

Test shave complete. I am clean shaven, but the edge is lacking. Further work will be taking place in due time

What a great resource has been lost...
But on topic, I just used the method from post #2 on a soft Sheffield blade. I followed the instructions to the letter. I haven't shaved with it yet (I will later today), but judging from how it feels on my arm I'm betting the shave will go very well.
Belated thanks to Bart for everything he has taught me, and everything he contributed here and to the wiki. You are missed.

I'm a little angry at whoever chased him off.
I didn't see it all go down though so I have no idea who it was.
people may think I'm a jerk (mostly because they fail to recognize my sarcasm) but how do you chase someone off?
at least this tread is still here
I've been trying this with an escher
so far the results are between fair and good
