Lemur what do you mean by use with water only?
For me that is 5-10 very light passes and that is it.

Well, I've got some that won't work with water only at all, the surface of them is to fine I guess, the razor gets stuck and starts to jump.

if you keep on going that will change and the razor will start gliding as if on glass, then you are done.

Hmm, but they also scratch badly without any slurry, they can have a slurry so fine it looks like clear water but without they make a noise like a train crash.
Particles gets loose from the hone and wreck havoc!

Particles shouldn't get loose on a hard finisher. The only crumbly stones I have are for sword polishing when a tiny sliver is used & is expected to break down.

Talked to toishi.jp, they say their Otaniyama asagi kamisori should be used with slurry at all times, nagura or wa-powder.
Nakayama mine is harder to email....

In Japan the norm is to use the stones with slurry but that doe snot mean that is how a stone should be used always.
For me at least half the fun is to experiment and find out how to use a stone to get the best edge off it.
When you say you want to contact Nakayama mine you mean Hatanaka?

Yeah, I do lots of experiments too, as long they don't harm the stones it's lots of fun.
About Nakayama mine I thought it was closed long ago.
To bad we can't get together and you could try my hard asagis.
I'll keep using them the only way I've found will get a nice edge, with slurry, however thin but they seem to need it.
Some kiitas I've got works fine with water only but they don't come close to the asagis.
Will try and get a Nakayama kiita kamisori in the future and compare them.

I'm no expert at all and I only have one JNAT, a shoubudani and when used with water only it behaves that way, it drags and jumps and is very uncomfortable to hone on. I don't know if it hurts the edge though cause I never use it that way.
Just a very light slurry that can hardly be seen and this stone is the easiest stone I have and gives me very sharp and smooth edges.
If that's the way my stone works best I'm happy to use it like that.
