Thread: How Many Razors Do Newbies have?

I probably would have been happy with my Reliance if I hadn't realized that different grinds, widths, etc., cause razors to have drastically different personalities. I didn't buy many safety razors, but I found that the Merkur Slant, which was supposed to offer a rather different shave from other safety razors—well, it just didn't.
When I got my TI Le Grelot, I found it very different from the Reliance and Geneva Cutlery. Comparatively heavy in the hand, but in a comfortable way. Capable of a smoothness I didn't (and still haven't) gotten from the other razors (although that may be my need to build my technique). Then came the Livi and the Williams, both also different from each other and my other razors, with the Williams being a real paradox: probably my biggest, heaviest razor, and yet it feels as maneuverable and nimble as the small classics, but right away capable of the smoothness of the Le Grelot.
Anyway, that's how I came to have so many razors so quickly: it wasn't just a new type of shaving, but a new world of different possible shaves. The luxury of being able have a choice between smells and sensations to begin one's day is truly wonderful. I wish my beard grew faster!

I have just started out, about two weeks in now.
I started with 2.
I bought a Feather DX disposable, just in case i wasn't able to maintain an edge on a proper blade.
And I have also purchased a Dovo Bergischer Löwe.
I'm planning on mastering these 2 for a little while, before buying any more.
But I shave my head as well and would like at least one more for now.
I think I will purchase a Mastro Livi, they look nice.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

It is just 3 weeks since I got my first straight and gave myself a first shave with one, so I am really a rookie but already I am hooked on the whole straight razor experience!
I got started with a Dovo Best Quality 5/8 razor with black scales, with a really ready-to-shave-sharp blade honed by Lynn at SRD.
Then almost at the same time I ordered a Revisor 6-0004 also with black scales because I thought this just looked great.
Soon coming up, I hope it is on its way through the mail, is a Wacker Antik 6/8 with horn scales. This also is a looker and on the German forums and here also I read positive reviews so I am curious how that one turns out.
Then I am thinking of getting a custom razor one day, but that is a long way up the road.
A Robert Williams or Frank Warner or Maestro Livi or, oh well…
Thanks,
Paul

I am so glad I am not alone
I have been losing sleep following auctions on ebay I never bid on then kick myself when I see a filly 13 for 150 US. Or just losing sleep checking the classified or if people update their website. I'm not starting at the beginning. I started in the new year got a palmer 5/8 for 50 bucks. Loved it and love it more and more, until there was rust in the pins. Had to send it away so I got a a henckels 5/8 round point which I am using now and absolute love to death. Great shaver but to be honest I don't have a good basis to compare. I shave regularly - every one and half days on average and it is so relaxing. What's in the post? Filly 14 with carbon fibre handles, Wade and Butcher 13/16 Chopper, Le Grelot and just today I bought a Wapi off ebay (first ebay purchase)... But how much do I have on the list, ALOT. And my list gets longer and longer every day. Like Sham says it really is like a virus and I can't control it, though I have managed to stop myself before buying countless times - there is some sort of self-restraint but uncontrollable urges behind them. I am so glad to hear there are others like me.

R.A.D. aside...
Right now I have 3 in rotation:
1 Bresduck Lifetime Jr.
1 sweet J.R. Torrey that I picked up from senior member Mainaman
1 6/8 Dovo Bismarck (the gorgeous red one with "mother of toilet seat") purchased from SRP and honed by Lynn.
After shaving with the Bismarck for the first time and discovering the true meaning of "honed" I was hooked. It's turned into an obsession for a number of reasons. All you have to do is browse the restoration threads and find gurus like Maximilian and Glen and you want one of each…
So now I have 5 more in need of restoration and honing; I plan to send the promising ones off to a pro for honing before I determine their restorability. I'll be shaving with all of them but will practice honing and experiment with restoration on those which would be least likely to get me banned from this board for doing so.
This rabbit hole goes to China, anyone coming?
