There's a learning curve for straight-razor shaving. And it's a lot longer than one shave.

If you want to give this a fair shot -- as opposed to "I tried it and I _knew_ it wouldn't work!" -- get the Poor Man's strop kit, and expect to build up your skills slowly.

And _do not_ strop the razor before you shave with it!

Yes. Larry's a stand up guy, and will get you started in the right direction.

and would the $25 razor be any good?

One of my best razors was in that category.

I feel that I should chime in and comment. Larry at Whipped Dog is most certainly a stand up guy and top notch vendor. Larry is what all say he is and if there is ever a problem rest assured it will be taken care of. I speak from experience as a brush I ordered came from a supply he had received from his supplier that were defective and was not apparent until after some use. Larry learned of the defect and it was immediately replaced and his vendor informed so they could correct their problem and actually improve the product to meet Larry's expectations and that of his customers. Order in confidence.

Same experience here, though with a silvertail badger brush knot and handle. Very friendly, very communicative and took the time with me, a new timer also, to go through things with me.

    Big thumbs up for Larry.

I didn't. Shot the moose, boiled the bone, enjoyed the soup and made the scales including the scrimshaw myself.

Got my first straight razor from Larry 3 weeks ago. It was a sight unseen flawed and I ordered it with the poor man strop and a few other things. It arrived quickly and have been shaving with it ever since. Not the prettiest but shaves great. Will defiantly do business with him again.
