Thanked: 247He is a good guy.
You will get a fair deal, and a razor that will function just fine...but it will be ugly as sin (probably). This concept (Whipped Dog) is PERFECT for the guy that thinks he may want to get into straight shaving as you will receive exactly what is needed to answer that question (a true, shave ready razor).
The only down side is that you will likely get very tired of having a razor that only works well...it seems a solid component of shaving for many of us is a razor that also LOOKS nice
I do not regret dealing with Larry one bit...he is a class act!

I suspect you'll find no one here with a bad word to say about Larry, aka Whippeddog. He got a lot of us started on the path to straight razor shaving, myself included. There's a steep learning curve however. Count on perhaps a month or more before you're proficient. A strop is a must. Get a cheap but serviceable one from the dog because you'll likely nick it up learning to strop correctly. Ask questions, we're here to help.
Welcome and good luck!

Thanked: 1195Personally, I'd never buy anything sight unseen but Larry's business model does seem quite popular. Ultimately the choice is yours.

There is a "no vendor bashing" rule on SRP, so you may get one sided answers.

I have 5 razors from him. All are great shavers and I have yet to get one I am not happy with. I tend to prefer the vintage razor anyway. He is a great guy and eager to answer questions and you can tell he is in it because he loves it and not for the money. I am going to get one of his scuttles as soon as the holidays are over because he is a little backed up. He makes it a point to tell you if that you think he charged too much he will fix it. I highly recommend him. You can get a nice kit from him on the cheap that will perform just as good as most new ones out there. They come professionally honed too.

Thanked: 247Experiences with Whipped Dog Shaving?
Yes it's bad form to bash, but honesty is what we are here for. I would not consider it bashing to relay honest info...so I did. My razor from Larry looks quite bad, but works quite well. That is not bashing, it's fact (well...appearance is subjective, but most here would consider cosmetic devil's spit to "look quite bad").
Additional description of the razor would include statement that there was so much hone wear that the blade has nearly been converted to a 4/8 wedge, and the blade stabilizers were ground off. I'd guess that this razor started life as a 6/8.
Still, not bashing! He delivered EXACTLY what his business model advertises (a professionally honed shave ready straight razor).
I'll say it again, I have no regrets, he is a great guy and I knew that I was not buying a beauty model

Thanked: 37I've bought two razors, from the "sight half seen"section where you get a written description and they're great. He is also very helpful with any questions. Great guy.

My two razors from larry were fine, shave really well and nothing wrong with the look of the scales or blade. With the poor mans strop kit as well you can't go far wrong for something to learn on. His badger brushes are very reasonably priced and do a good job too.

Thanked: 55My experience was as everyone has written. My "sight unseen" razor was not ugly at all. It was just a plain black plastic scale 5/8 razor.
I've replaced all my scales with wooden scales anyway but not necessary at all.
