No, the brush sits in the top compartment. Best way to use the Moss Scuttle is to fill the upper and lower chamber with hot water and soak your brush. Then dump the water, refilling only the bottom chamber with water. You build your cream in the top chamber, and that is where you leave the brush while shaving. Check out the pics in this thread and it will make sense.

Yes, that's interesting. I guess you were responding to his description of the size of the scuttle where I was responding to the size of his brush. I'll be interested to hear how you make out with that size. What knot size do you use?

I would say your qestion has been answered. This is not a calssic scuttle. It is not possible to put your brush in the water unless you do as RT suggests. As I stated I put my brush and Moss scuttle in the sink while the sink fills with water.

It is my understanding this scuttle was designed to be used mainly with creams.

I use the C&E Edwin Jagger which is (I believe) a 22mm knot size. In his review he talked about using it with the vulfix 2234 which is also a 22 mm knot size and mentioned that they were "made for each other" so I figured it would pair up with my Edwin Jagger well also. I'm hoping I don't have to order a second one because the size is wrong

It's waiting for me at the post office, I'll pick it up and test it out as soon as I can get down there to claim it.

I'm using the same brush you are so, personal preference aside there should be excellent grounds for comparison. By preference I mean that I do appreciate the space in my rather large mug for whipping up lather.

The brush comment I was sticking on was,
"For starters, my favored Simpson Wee Scot brush was just too small for the Moss Scuttle, even though Sara sent me the small Scuttle ..."

Well Xman I used the Moss scuttle for the first time this morning and I can say that the small (8 cm) scuttle works great with my Edwin Jagger 22mm brush. I'd go further and state that I really would NOT want the larger scuttle with this brush. With the smaller bowl, the brush splays out perfectly in the bowl against the sides and stays nicely warm. I think with the extra couple of centimeters the larger bowl wouldn't keep my brush as warm.

Isn't Dr. Moss on this site? If so I'd like to say THANKS and I'll be sending a nice thank you to Sara (the potter) as well. I did an extra S-N pass today just because the lather was still warm and felt so good on my face. This thing beats my old beat up coffee mug hands down!

Now I just need to get that cross-grain pass down. I'm smooth as glass in two directions at least!

It's funny while I really love the scuttle for soap, I don't feel the need while using cream. I just put some on my brush and lather on my face. I will have to try and see what it is like.

How do you use the Moss scuttle for soap? Do you shave off a bit of soap and lather it up in the scuttle or do you just load your brush and then build it in the scuttle bowl?
