    Gary,

With soap, you start with the soap in it's original container, work the brush until you have the beginnings of a good lather, and then transfer to the scuttle.

Actually It would be tough to do. The classic scuttle is made for soap and not cream. It has soap on top with holes in the bottom so water can drain back. Your brush sits in the water beneith it . See the picture of a scuttle on classicshaving.com

    Rich,

I was referring to making a soap lather in the Moss scuttle. I keep all of my soaps in containers that allow a bit of working room, but once the lather is beginning to develop, I have always transferred to a larger bowl.

Really, How come? Do you get a better lather? I do most of the whipping on my face. Both Soap and Cream..

    Rich,

I don't know! I started this way! I probably do this because I started out with a puck of Williams in a small coffee mug, and needed the room to be able to generate lather. The only lather I build directly on my face is with a shave stick.

The Moss Scuttle is for keeping lather warm between passes. If you only do one pass, the brush stays warm enough from the tap water you loaded it with. If you do more than one pass, if you keep the brush in the scuttle between passes, the brush will stay warm. Even if you prefer to lather on your face, just pop the brush in the scuttle between passes-- though it's probably better to give it a swirl or two in the scuttle just for thermal contact.

    It's not necessarily for a "better lather", just a warmer lather for pass 2, 3, 4, ...

Do you have a tool for this application or what are you doing?

    X,

I use a butter knife. It's the only thing in my arsenal I DON'T want sharp!

I know this doesn"t sound exciting but I use my index finger. Whatever fits easily is enough. I find more than that is a waste.
