From my understanding this is incorrect. It is between management and the union.

I see where I might not be seeing the the whole story. The worker could be claiming that the schedule of working Christmas was in retaliation of his/her trying to form a Union.

Employee requested off during the week of Christmas. When creating the schedule, I granted his request and scheduled other employees to work that week. The completed schedule was posted. A week later the employee decides he wants to work. Since he schedule is already full, I deny his new request. Union charges that I do not have the right to refuse his request.

What about the other worker(s)? Are they now happy not to have to work Christmas week?

Surely if you have a written leave form from them then they really don't have anywhere to go. Sounds like the point is moot if your boss let them work anyway.

I hope it works out for you and you come out unscathed.

Having to change the one employees schedule does not allow me to change anyone else's, and since I ended up having to change his, three more have decided they wanted to work. Puts us way over budget.

Good news is that the bosses know that this particular Union rep has it out for me. He has even gone to the chief demanding that I get a 14 day vacation (unpaid variety). Just the cost of being a boss I guess.
On the plus side, retirement in about four years is really looking attractive.

I wish I had a contract that allowed me to do that....

Speaking of contracts I would like to put one out on the squirrel in my yard. He has gotten out of hand. A free six pack of your choice to anyone that brings his hide to me.
